Any suggestions on the best compression testers for our race 455's? Also, how about spring testers? Moroso? I have a 13-1 495 ci I'm about to put in and want to keep an eye on things. Thanks for any suggestions.
Jim, I use the Tavia leakdown tester available through Jegs and probably Summit. It's not as easy to use as the Snap-On, but much cheaper! As for compression testers, get the screw-in type, those press-in's are a compromise at best. (and a PAIN to use by yourself)
Jim, I ordered my leak-down tester on-line, it's a Yonther. I've only had it 6 mo. or so. They are located in CA and their number is (510) 483-2181. I think it was ~$50, good value I think. It has two gauges of course and reads up to 100psi, has a regualtor and screw type fitting with an "O" ring. They include a chart to shows % of leakage. No case however. I also have a dynamic compression tester, it an old NAPA Balkamp tester that my Dad had. It has several shapes and lengths of fittings each with a tapered rubber fitting to hold onto the spark plug hole. The gauge reads up to 300psi. The screw-in type may be preferred here instead.
Hi Guys, Jim........Moroso ( I believe it is) has a single-dial unit that shows actual leakdown percentage without the math involved with a two-dial unit. Sorry, I don't have the part number.
What Kerry is describing is like the Snap-On unit. If you are like me and have a habit of losing paperwork, its much nicer than the tavia or Yonther unit.
I have the morosso unit and like it. I can post part # tomorrow, I think it was over $100 when i got mine 4 or 5 years ago. This is a great tool for tracking engine condition, very easy to use.
