I’m replacing a new knob for the column shift. I managed to get the old one off, but the new one is stuck half way and wont budge going all the way in. Any tips on how to install this knob properly?

I have removed the steel arm and thrown it in the freezer. I also warm up the new knob under hot water.

Once cold, I quickly put the arm in a vise, align up the warmed knob and tapped it home with a piece of wood and a hammer.

I have done this same thing with putting the steel bands back on the rally steering wheels.

Wow, sounds like a lot of work to install it back on than I expected. Thanks for the tip.

Use to work in a screw machine shop that made those column gearshift levers. The knobs would get pressed onto the knurled shaft by some little Ole ladies in the secondary dept.
They had small hydraulic presses that would hold the arm and press the plastic chrome plated knob on.
    Pretty simple process.

That's interesting. Now if only I had a hydraulic press instead of pounding it on with a rubber hammer.
