Coil over issues

Over this past summer I put coil over shocks in the front of my car. I have been having a problem with the car launching. The car is not transfering at all. I changed springs from 350 lbs to 450 lbs. I talked to 2 very reputable chassis shops they recommend I take them out and go back to coil springs. They both state that in a heavy (3550#) car that those springs will not store enough energy to transfer. I'm just trying to get some input from people who may be more familiar with this.

You're not the first person I've heard say that. Bobb Makley was the first I heard about, and that was about 5 years ago. His car did the same thing as yours. The idea of the Moroso springs for instance is to take a long soft spring and compress it alot to reach the right ride height. Then all of that energy is stored so when the car launches, the spring keeps pushing up all the way to the bump stop. Did you ever notice when you jack up the front of the car with Moroso springs, how easy it is to jack up until it hits the bump stop? That's stored energy. The coil over springs, on the other hand, are so short that the spring "tops out" before the car gets up close to the bump stops, so the car stops transfering weight. Those short springs are meant for a lightweight car with a violent leave. That set-up is trying to keep the car from going up on the rear bumper. However, it doesn't help a heavy, "soft" leaving car, like ours.

Does that help at all? Have fun.

    Dom,
I went to the C/O's last year when I got my car back together and the 60 ft's have become inconsistent compared to before w/ the Moroso springs.

Jury is still out for me,But I'm pretty sure I'm going back to the Moroso's.
Only thing slowing me down is how good Tom Rix does w/ the QA1 C/O up front???

The QA1 coil overs worked wonders on my blue car. 1.35-1.37 consistent from 1.47-1.49 consistent. Also used an HR Bar which is also well worth the price.

Thanks for the responses guys :TU: . Its a littlle more reassuring to hear others have had the same problem in the past. I thought it would be nice upgrade to go with coilovers being I had to buy new shocks anyway. I know the first set of springs I had in there were to soft where I had to run the adjusting nut 3/4 of the way up. But the second set I ran up just about 1/4 the way up. I figured that was it but no different. I think I'm going to cut my losses and jus go back to the basics.
I have heard from other guys that the Moroso springs are good when new, but they don't work well with age. Would you prefer the Moroso springs over a new set of say Moog springs?

    Yes on the Moroso's......
Depending on the front end weight,You need #47190 or #47160 for a lower ride height like my car.

Hey Gary, I used Moroso's years ago and want to put them back in. Mine is a street/strip ride. Not sure which ones to use with my weight set up, can you suggest?

    All steel GS
    455 turbo 400
    Full interior
    no A/C
    aluminum heads
    aluminum radiator.

    Thanks.

    I would guess the 47190's for you....Assuming it's a 68-72 car?
If you look on Moroso's website they have a chart for the spring app. based on the front end weight.
But the two I mentioned here are probably the more common for our cars.

I ordered the Moroso 47160 and a set of QA1 shocks. Hopefully I can get the car back where it used to be, in the low 1.40's 60'. A 9 sec. timeslip would also be a bonus.
