So, now that I have my car moving under its own power I would like some clarification on a couple of things. First, where the hell does the return spring go? The assembly manual picture is awful, so please do not repost waht I already have. The mangled up original( I guess) is now going from the hole in the clevis pin at the bottom going through the fork and heim joint all the way up to the bottom of the control arm. I first tried the oblong hole in frame, but not enough tension for the pedal to spring back. Can anyone show me via picture where they have the return spring on their car? Second, when using the "heim joint napa pushrod", what do you do about the lack of ridgidity at the clevis pin? The ball and socket creates slop that has to be taken out before the rod actually begins to move.... Thanks in advance for any help.... -Kyle
Kyle - Possibly the wrong spring, originals are hard to find. It should go from the oblong hole in the frame to the top of the clevis pin. The shoulder of the clevis pin will hold it should go around pin, should be enough room to also get the hitch pin in the bottom of the clevis. You can also put it in the clevis hitch pin hole but if the spring breaks then you have no pin? Terry
Hopefully this photo helps. My return spring goes from the clevis pin to the hole in the frame up in front of where the distribution block is located on a drum/drum car. If you have discs and a larger proportioning valve in this location, the spring isn't able to get past the larger brass prop valve to this hole in the frame. FWIW, I'm using a HELP section generic return spring and I bent the end to fit the length I needed. In the photo, you can see I'm also running the NAPA spherical rod end. The 732-1129 spherical end has a 3/8" hole for the clevis to match the 3/8" hole in the clutch fork. Are you using a 3/8" clevis? You can also see where I had to buy a hardware store clevis to accept the return spring. I've run this set up without issue for close to 10 years.
Thanks for the picture, but I have yet another question. How long is the lower rod once you put it all together? I used the same heim joint and a 4" stud and it seems to need to be longer. Don't get me wrong it works, but I would rather have more threads screwed into the heim... Any help again appreciated... -Kyle
That ones probably a 3". I've run them with as little as 6 or 7 full turns Into the heim joint. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
