I have a 65 Lesabre that makes a clicking & scraping noise while turning the steering wheel.. When the noises occur the steering seems to bind up a little bit.. The noise seems to be coming from the steering column that is in the area of the turn signal switch and gear selector. In fact if I put my hand around the steering coloum in that area I can feel the clicking noise and the colum in that area will push out a little bit.. What could have came a part or broken that would create this problem?

    Thanks

Sounds like a broken bearing race. I would take the wheel off and inspect for damage. I would not drive the car because it could bind permanently and cause an accident.

What part would be considered the "bearing race"? I had the steering wheel removed and all parts seem to be ok.. Hopefully by greasing the bearings that are in the turn signal switch will fix the problem... The only thing that turns beside the actual steering rod is the metal ring and bearings that are in the turn signal switch...

You also need to check the bearings at the other end of the column. The column will act as an antenna and transmit the sound to the steering wheel area. I would remove the column and do a tear down.

While your at it you might check the intermediate steering shaft. On the steering column end there is a bell shaped "adapter" or connector with the rubber seal on it. Inside this adapter is a "u-joint" type connection that is packed with grease. Excess wear inside this bell shaped attachment or lack of grease may be another possible source of slack in the steering--and possible noise.

The bearings that you speak of are pictured in the lower half of the steering coloum correct? They are labeled as "Upper bearing" & "Lower Bearing"?

When you say "intermediate steering shaft", exactly what part does that reference on the above diagram? Also I am having a problem locating the bell shaped adapter. Could you please tell me where the parts you speak of are referenced on the diagram

The problem is coming from the Retainer & Bearing Assembly. That is the part that is at the very bottom of the steering shaft.. It goes between the steering shaft and the power steering gear box... Can I buy a new one or will I have to see about remanufacturing mine?
