    Hi Guys,
I'm over the pond in England, and new to this website, but I already have a question for you!
I am helping out a friend who has a Carter AFB 3131S Carb. The ID number on it is: 3249S AB2
We've taken it apart, and found one of the metering rods broken, the number on them is: 16-165

Can anyone tell me more about this carb, and maybe give me some idea of where I can get new rods, or a rebuild kit?

    Cheers

    Try here.

I beleive the rebuild kit you need is. AF2083

Also the Carter AFB is now Edelbrock so the rods from them should work.

Bret, thanks for the help, really appreciated!
The website shows my friend's carb, and that it goes on a 318, which is correct. This 318 is in a Bristol 410 (1970), which is a hand-built British 'Gentlemen's Express'.
    A couple of other questions:
Does the rebuild kit contain the metering rods?

The order slot on the website for metering rods goes by their dimensions, which I don't know. They look like three-stop rods, not two. Does that make sense?
Also, the website showed the part number as 16-XXXX, and when I look around on the internet, all the rods are this sequence (eg 16-5749), but the ones I have are 16-165.

A bit confused... any help you can give is much appreciated

    Tom,

No rebulid kits normally do not come with the rods.

If you can I would say call them directly and see if they can give you more information on the rods.

Or I would say if you can get ahold of a Edelbrock Carburetor Calibration kit it may have what you need. It comes with 3 set of rods and jets. that should give you what you need.

Just to let you guys know, I called the Carburetor Shop, and they were really helpful! I am waiting for my friend to make the decision to buy them. We are trying a place over here in England that we found out about two weeks ago, but I don't think they'll be able to help us.

Thanks again for all the help

    Tom-
AFB metering rods might look like 3-step rods, but only the bottom two steps count. They are designed to have the larger diameter part of the rod down inside the jet opening at high vacuum (low load) for leaner mixture, and the smaller tip of the rod inside the jet at low vacuum (high load) for richer mixture. The springs you install under the little pistons control at what engine vacuum level the rods are down or up.

You can carefully measure the diameter of the rod on the 2 steps with a micrometer to get a feel for what you have now and find what is available that is closest to that size. Or you can find out from a carb specs book what rod diameters, jets and springs were used in that carb originally from the factory and start from there.
