Looking for tips and techniques ( or a good link) to get replacement carpet to lay down. Granted it’s been in the box for almost 2 years. I took it out and let it sit for a week. It’s been laying in the car for a few days. I’ve tried hot water, cold water and steam. The steam seems to work at softening and relaxing but when dry and cool it wants to wrinkle up again. Do I need to be patient and work the steam better?

I would glue trans hump and carpet down let it dry then pull on it as you work your way to the door using steam good luck

FWIW a carpet layer I know (house) gets the house as HOT as possible that way the carpet expands when it is laid.. then at the much cooler temps of 65-75 the carpet is tight and he does not need to come back at a later time to re-stretch the carpet...

I have found that leaving the carpet out in the sun to relax the material (especially the backing) helps a lot. Be sure to get the "tar paper" underlay for the floorboard, and the jute fiber underneath, as the replacement carpets usually do NOT have enough backing compared to the factory carpet.
Also, as someone else suggested, be sure that you got the carpet for a column shift automatic carpet, as many have found out that the four-speed carpets are not correctly molded for the Buick floor hump. (Why I do not know...)
The carpet SHOULD have sufficient excess on the front and edges to require trimming to fit properly. I used an aluminum backed underneath the carpet in addition to the jute, as I wanted additional sound and thermal insulation. It came in 4ft by 6ft roll, needing two rolls for the floor alone.

Thanks, turns out 2 years ago I did order the manual carpet. I assumed all floor humps were the same, but the vinyl insert for the 3 peddles was different ( I should have asked). Anyway with the backing, some adhesive on the hump, and some steam it's laying down ok. A day or two in the hot sun will do the rest.
