I am trying to ID the 4 Barrell carburetor on my 65 Buick Electra 401 ci. but none of the numbers I find on it are similar to ones the I find in parts catalogs. I have stamped on the top passenger side 2 6 1744 in a square box On the drivers side side of the carb it has 0- 1721 stamped in it I just recently purchased this car, first time out on a classic and after a recent drive the next day it developed a bad vacuum leak that seems to be under the carb. I am going to try replacing base gasket because that seems most logical, but I recently read about a possible plug in the intake manifold that rots out. Hoping I might be able to see it with the carb removed but first need to id the carb to order the parts. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
The tag with part number is probably long gone. Any numbers stamped into the flange? https://www.carburetor-blog.com/knowledge-base/carter-afb-carburetor-identification/
Yes the tag is definitely gone and I don't see any numbers on the base. Are you familiar with the difference between the Carter carb and the Rochester Carb. It seems the base gaskets are the same but they recommend using a metal plate with the Carter carb to reduce the possibility of damage to the base plate on the carb. It doesn't appear to be there now, but wonder if thats why it developed a vacuum leak.
The metal plate is NOT optional. The Rochester carb is a 4G. I think you would get more feedback if you posted this in the Nailhead Forum. Sometimes, the help you get depends on which Forum you choose to post in. https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?t...port-matching-stky.225437/page-9#post-3134164 https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/401-stumbles-at-standstill-in-gear.298994/#post-2475516 https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/401-nailhead-not-running-smooth.219210/#post-1766791 https://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Carburetor_ID_Rochester_4G.htm
That is definitely a Carter. The ID picture is odd - every Buick Carter carb I have seen has been stamped on the passenger side front base plate. Here is the SS plate for sale: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1721937296...:Buick&hash=item28178bcc62:g:OiMAAOSw22pcWzoQ
Ok thank you for the help on that. I would have never looked there for it. I did purchase a new plate and 2 gaskets but haven't changed it yet. Car has been running fine with no vacuum leak since that 1 day. I dont see the base plate so I am going to change it anyway. Thanks again.
