Can you fill a short block that was already assembled?

    Can you fill a short block (more like half, up to bottom of water jackets) that was already assembled? Motor was built 10yrs ago as spare. Like to make a but more hp than originally intended with some better heads but want it to stay together.

    I know normally you fill first then line hone and bore......

    Tricky... :) :)
    Conventional logic says no because it tightens the bore about a thou to the fill line, requiring a dust with the hone to bring 'that portion' back which is always more of a challenge than honing a straight cylinder (but not that bad)
    I suppose if you put it below the ring travel, already had a loose fit, weren't concerned with the taper or effect on the mains or were going to try to hone the difference, then you probably could.
    I've done it on other EM engines (Expendable Motors) with the above in mind.
    I do not know how much it affects the mains (if any) on your Buick block, being that it's already torqued.

    [adding that I didn't ever do this to an assembled short block, just finished honed and then re-honed. If it's torn down that far, no sense in risking anything]

    Probably better than not filling it at 675hp....or maybe detune it with a thicker head gasket but still keep the good flowing heads and no fill.

    But I've had good luck with block fill rather not roll the dice. I do have a Poston girdled pan which should help....

    I can't say that it would predictably tighten the bores all the same amount and without deviations, so be prepared for anything. :D

    I wouldn't . I know they move . Knock it apart Bolt a torque plate and fill it all the way up . Measure the bore before the plate and after bolted . then fill it & check it once cured . Once you have done that if it has distorted have it re honed . If the bore is on the big side the pistons can be coated by Line to line . Then of course New rings .

    That's a solid plan right there, Line2Line has done a couple of sets of pistons for me now with their coating, to "save them".. great stuff.

    Great stuff, see I told you when I first posted the link for them about 3 1/2 years ago it was great stuff, glad you liked it.

    Dave had that coating done for one of the turbo 4 cylinder guys to refresh the engine and it picked up about another 20 HP on the dyno from the last time it was put together.

    Just noticed the other day that United Engine and Machine(KB and Silv-O-Lite pistons) has teamed up with them to have them coat their pistons;

    They do a lot of OEM stuff now as well. They have a video right on the UEM website about the coating, they didn't even have a video on their own home page, they must really believe in their coatings.

    OK, thanks....what I suspected. Oh well, I'll just use the Poston pan and keep fingers crossed. Just a back up motor....

    What about a really short fill?...to strengthen the bottom end......only half way up to the water jackets? Or would that do nothing.

    Better than nothing I guess lol . Bruce is that the New pan I sold you few years ago .
