Can I bend the neck of my gas tank?

First off, I understand that anything involving the gas tank is dangerous and proper safety is needed first. With that being said...

Can I bend the neck of my gas tank up 1 inch to better clear my bumper and license plate so the gas nozzle can sit properly on my filler neck? I was thinking about literally jacking the neck up with a jack and wood, bending it into a higher position. Has anybody done this before? Would the weld break at the base of the neck first?

I don't know why the gas tank filler hole is so low. I do know it was replaced a few years ago by previous owner. Possible wrong gas tank? Or is this the way it is? Its just a pain in the butt to fill up with gas. The nozzles are so sensitive that it always cuts out on me because it wont make a good seal.

    Thanks guys!!

What year are you working with? 70 is lower than 71,72. Sounds like the wrong tank.

Do u think its bendable with enough pressure? Anything would be better than what I have now.

My 70 was low when I installed it. Hitting the rear frame . It wasn’t the neck it was where it attached to the tank itself. Shipped boxed with the neck exposed. Used Slight pressure not to damage the solder joint and it moved just enough and pretty ez fix. I wouldn’t use a jack or pipe etc

When I was a teenager, I tried to bend the neck of a gas tank on a Chevelle. Ending up cracking the joint where the neck enters the tank. The first time I had enough money to fill up the tank, it all poured out on the ground.

Have you considered loosening up the tank straps and adding a soft shim at the back of the tank on each side to raise/tilt the front up?

You have the wrong tank. Speaking from experience.

Its not uncommon for a replacement tank to need the filler neck tweaked a little. I've had to bend the neck slightly to raise it up.

You know how many times I've had a tank hanging by the neck to do a sender? Not enough book time to remove them sometimes

I like that idea, I will look into that modification first.

I’m thinking a 1/4” shim at the front could move/tilt the rear up 3/4” in my thinking.
