Just picked up a low mileage '64 Electra with a 401 and a Carter carb that is definitely in need of a rebuild. Who rebuilds these things? I know we have quadrajet gurus here, but I'm not familiar with who are the go to people for Carter carbs. I want to have someone rebuild it for me-this is not something I want to do myself.

    4 bbl carb I take it ?
anybody localish to you that is proficient in rebuilding edelbrock/carter carbs SHOULD be able to disassemble , clean it , kit it and reassemble . the problem areas i think may be : bad gas sitting in there too long , getting the jets out for proper passageway cleaning and if there are parts that are incorrect on there finding those parts . edelbrocks and oem carters are NOT totally the same , just same basic functions , look similar . have the carb number ready for info . tag on it ?
does it look original and untouched ?
if you need a 100% restored looking carb then you should search a little for a properly experienced carter rebuild service . I'm sure people on here will have some suggestions for you .
edit : ok , just did a quick search - 4jet style with 4 vent tubes on top ? yep , top pulls off , jets and floats down inside . does look dif than edelbrock though .

Yes it is a 4 barrel-once the carb is removed I can post the carb number. I know the previous owner had the carb out and worked on it himself but what he did to it I'm not sure.

A carb. number would be the place to start. AND, pics would be better.

    David,

That's an original carb. I can rebuild it no problem. Will probably need the base milled as the majority of them are warped from over tightening, AND throttle shaft bushings at the least. ALSO a pic of the bottom to see how badly eroded it may be.

IMG_7023.jpg IMG_7024.jpg IMG_7025.jpg IMG_7026.jpg Ok Tom here are pictures of the bottom....if you can send a pm regarding a ballpark figure for what a rebuild would cost and what you estimate the turnaround time would be, I'd appreciate it.

    David,

In the last pic all the way to the right it looks as though the exhaust has eaten away at one corner. IF metal is in fact missing I'm afraid it's not repairable/rebuild-able. Aluminum that contaminated/dirty & being the casting is not that great to begin with it'll be near impossible to weld. The metal plate was probably missing causing the exhaust to "eat" away at the aluminum.

david - just bumped up an older carb ad in "parts for sale" section . carter #4055S , '66 340 carb so not what you need but there is a good pic of the bottom . should be similar design to yours and you can maybe compare them and see what he is talking about .

Thanks for everyone's input. What looks like missing metal on the carb is just a spot where the gasket is scraped off. A fellow member of my local car club gave a good referral to an in state carb shop that's been rebuilding them for years. So sent it off today to see what they can do with it. If it is beyond help, I'm sure I'll be asking for advice on a replacement!
