Buick 350 in S10?

I'm sure someone's done it before- so I'm looking for a little help.

I have the Buick 350, the BOP TH350, and I can have an S10 2wd pickup roller for $300. I'd like to have something to play around in this coming season and I know my big block skylark won't be finished since I won't settle for anything less than perfect on that.

So- fitting an SBB 350 into an S10 will be a slight challenge I'm sure, so I'm wondering about motor mounts, and firewall and steering clearances.

    Any help is appreciated

    Thanks.

    I say GO FOR IT!

I am putting a Buick 350 into my 81 Silverado using this mount:

    http://www.speedwaymotors.com/v6-buick-motor-mount,3272.html

It is good quality and I am going to weld it right to the frame as well as bolting it. This is a flexable setup so you can move the engine and trans back or forward if you want.

my advise if if you have smog in youre area
if out of inspection, get it done with original engine if possible...if current inspection keep it under 5k that year then it'll be safe for the older sbb due to emissions exampt sticker!

Sounds like a fun prject Matt. I have a couple of 350's laying around that used to run, probably not any more. My cousin and I are thinking of making some kind of woods buggy out of a 85 Bronco II. The 350's came to mind, but I have two 460's from mid 70's trucks (gotta keep the Ford all Ford ya know). My brother has mentioned using one in my old 86 Regal he bought off of me, but he scored a 4.1L that he plans to turbo.

so those mounts will work on the SBB even though its for a V6 huh? kool

I'm thinking this truck could be very fast and very cool... providing the steering works when the SBB is sitting in there lol

The 350 will have a TA stage 1 intake, a decently lumpy cam that will make some power (any suggestions? I think the TA 310 should do the trick without being too wild) Mild DIY head work, 9:1-10:1 CR and headers. I'll figure out the carb situation when the time comes. Everything else should be ok stock (right?) I'll have a friend go through the TH350 to make sure its all kosher, 2500-ish stall... and probably have to beef up the S10's poor little 10 bolt... or maybe get an 8.5" out of a blazer in the boneyard.

Delete all the factory emblems, get some GS emblems, a stage 2 hood scoop, and buick rallye's to make 'em look twice :Brow:

Trying to keep a low budget... some stuff might get skimped, but I'd like it to run pretty strong since most street cars around here are no slouches :3gears:

I won't have any trouble at all with emissions. I've got a handful of friends who will pass anything I own thats safe to drive... if they pass my '94 F150 clunker they'll pass any damn thing

yeah they're only really hard on non-exempt stuff here... I have never had a catalytic converter, air system, or anything on my smog vehicles... and they've always passed lol

Yeah, the V6 mounts are the same as the Buick 350. The nice thing about the kit I showed is that you just need to drop the engine in locate the mount mark it and then attach the mount and go without messing around with having the mounts be a big fight to get in the right possition...

The S-10 front half of the frame is very similar to the G-Body (Regal) and this should be pretty easy to make happen. The frame mounts will not bolt on but it may be easier to weld them in. Grab the 8.5" rearend right away. The 7.5 does not live behind the torque the SBB makes. I went through those things in the 90's like M&M's. If you use slicks it will be a must. The S-10 is a very light body so the thing should perform really well with a 3.42 or 3.23 gear. Getting outta the hole will not be a problem and it should pull really hard all the way down the 1/4 mile.

I know someone on this board has done it before, either "doc" or "fido," one of the two, I think. I think they had to modify the steering shaft somehow, I forget exactly. But, they did it. :TU:

    Good luck with yours!

Don't worry....anything a SBC will fit into a SBB will fit into and that is everything. Quoting my father as we install a SBB into a Chevette. 1994

thanks for the help guys.... I'm definitley going to use those mounts... maybe I could drill for the bolts and weld? I over do things but its never bit me in the ass yet...

as for the steering... shouldn't be too bad I don't think... and the headers may have to be custom, which will probably be the hardest part of the whole swap.

For the rear end- I'm pretty sure I'm going to stick with the good ol' 8.5 nothing wrong there. I was thinking a heavier gear though... I know it would hurt traction but would probably run like a raped ape once I get the launch down pat. This thing will probably never have slicks on it, and it will be a street/strip toy, not all out racer.

I'm really excited to start this build, I just gotta get the damn truck over to my shop and get going on it... :Dou:

just one more question for now- in comparison, how much weight difference is there between an SBC and an SBB? If I remember correctly, the SBB is 435 lbs, but I'm unsure on the SBC. Not that I'm considering an SBC, just wondering.

There is a circletrack application for joints to move your steering over. For those mounts you need to measure the frame width, cut to the pipe to width but keep it centered. Weld the triangle pieces to the tubing, drill holes and bolt in the mount, then weld it. Make sure you test fit the 350 before welding. Contact Mark Burton for header flanges and use some s-10 aplication header kit with the tubes not attached to flanges yet. make sure you have the exhaust bolts broke loose before you drop the engine in... I also think you may want to go with a neer stock 350 and see how that works for you before you tear a good engine apart.... With a truck that light a stock 350 running right will have enough torque to make the truck FUN! Good luck and post pics!

well the engine is already torn apart, and didn't run when I pulled it. it's not in bad condition, but I know I'll want more than a stock 2 bbl mill lol.

Sounds like a good idea about the headers... makes a lot of sense.

are you talking about the speedway mounts or the stock regal V6 motor mounts?

Couldn't I just get a pair of stock regal V6 mounts and fit it from there like this- bolt them in, set the motor in the right place, mark them, then drill for bolts if possible and weld the frame side if needed? In fact, I was going to try dropping in the short block with the skylark mounts on it just to see if I can make it work. I also have access to a ton of regal parts so if the lark mounts don't work I can just go get those and not have to buy anything too wild...

ok now heres another good one- any suggestions on a radiator... I don't want to spend a lot here.... I still have the one from my skylark and its in perfect condition.... maybe mounting it on the front of the core support will make it work.......
