Video...how would I get video from a Hi-8 camcorder onto a cd disk? (without spending very much $$$, of course...)

I'm interested in this too. Got a digital video recorder for Christmas, and assumed it came with software to get the movies onto the computer. I know I will need a DVD writer to make discs, but what do I get for software to get the movies onto the computer? i was planning to go to Circuit City and throw myself at their mercy, but a recommendation or two here would be nice...
