I did a “skim” coat of filler on my ‘72 roof yesterday evening with Bondo brand filler. Being that I have not been in the auto painting business since the early ‘90s, I was familiar with the process of filler/catalyst but had some pretty disappointing results with the Bondo brand. Previously (three decades ago) I’d used Evercoat if I remember correctly. Seemed a little more friendly to work with. The Bondo mixed ok and “kicked” as I’d expected. That makes me think I mixed it without to much error. There are always many variables with questions such as this but the Bondo was ROCK hard and very difficult to work with a block. I got fairly grumpy and DA 80 gritted the bulk of all the Bondo off.

Question: has any one else had Bondo brand be that tough to work with? I think I’ll snag some Evercoat (maybe there’s something better these days?) and go back to what I know (after three decades, I can’t imagine there’s anything I do know other than sanding and blocking).

Question 2: looking towards primer, I’ve been planning to just use the Summit paints. They have a primer/surfacer as well. Anyone have experience with that product line?

Evercoat Rage Ultra is easy sanding stuff and is pretty creamy compared to Bondo, or even standard Evercoat Rage Gold.

I have no experience with Summit paints, but they are just rebranded from another manufacturer. Go to a local supply store and use PPG or Axalta budget friendly paint lines.

U S C "icing" is a great final topcoat over the filler work.
