Im looking to redo my exhaust on my 1978 lark, it has a 231 v6 even-fire im just looking for a deeper rumble if that is possible with a v6, i dont really want something that 'screams' at higher RPM but just sounds more aggressive over all. I have a budget of about a grand.

Before the engine swap, I just glass packed mine and it sounded healthy enough. 2" pipe is more than adequate. Mine was kept single exhaust. I kinda wonder what my odd fire would sound like as a dual exhaust, but yours is even fire so probably no funky rythm to it.

thank you for the info, i read that if you get to big of piping that it can have negative effect on your engine, is that only with dramatically over sized like 3 or 4 inch?

I think you'd be hard pressed to notice a difference in power from exhaust sizing, but the deal with exhaust sizing is you want to keep velocity up in the exhaust so inertia moves it along as much as possible. If the pipe size is too big the velocity drops and the gases back up in the exhaust port/manifold. It's kind of splitting hairs in most cases.

aaron, cool car, welcome to the board... 2&1/2 inch should be pleanty for that v6. i wouldnt go 3 and lower your budget to 5-600 and save the other money for the project build up. i see your in puyallup, did you make the puyallup show? are you planning to make the vancouver show? i hope so, i planon being there, and hope to not be the only x-body. keep us up to date on your plans with that car.

are the 231 v6's a 'Low RPM' engine? i was just reading that glass packs sound best on low RPM engines was just curious, and where would be the best place to have exhaust work done? i cant do it myself, so maybe a place like Walts? or is that a no no?

not sure what "walts" is. just find a few local exhaust shops and get quotes.

My oddfire 231 was definately a low rpm beast. I had a single 2" exhaust with a single glass pack. It was all wound out by 4200rpm, but I think it was intake/carb limited, as I put a 4bbl intake on it and it revved a lot more freely, but still not sure how good that was for it, especially since it only had 25psi of oil pressure at 4,000rpm, lmao.
