Let me shed some light on alcohol. It will dentonate much worse than gas if not set up properly. It will rattle an engine like you would`nt belive. For those who dont belive me, I`ve been there and done that and have been working with this stuff since 1997. I would contact James Monroe who can set this system up with the right nozzles and pills. James works for Rons and gets real close with the correct tune up.

434, How can you tell when your engine is detinating ? Does it spark knock? If so I can install a knock sensor and monitor it going down the track. What would be the fix if it did? Would you pull out some timming, or richen it up. By the way, Both yours and Daves cars look badass! Thanks for the help. Also like to mention I will call James at rons and get his help. I have never run a big block on alchy, My small block never give trouble like this.I ran it 3 full seasons without having to pull the block out of the car.

Dave, the dentonation pounds on the piston. You might not hear it with open headers but thats one reason why engines should be dyno`d before they go into the car. Alot of people say its a waste of money to dyno an engine but they will wear out or break an engine or spend three seasons of racing figureing out a problem plus the wear and tear on the car. When you think about it, its a small price to pay.

I understand detonation , how do you get an 11:1 motor on alcy to do it ?
David if main bearings were down to bronze you must have an oil or clearance problem .
If this motor detonated something else must be very wrong , not a little lean or rich .

Not enough fuel, too much timing.

I have gotten in touch with Buick Bob and he said he would cross drill my crank, rebalance and set clearance for me. I Trust what you guys say,But it scares me to think this engine could do this damage this easy! I know the timming was 38, spark plugs are a light brown in color, heat was around 950, have mufflers on car and engine never missfired going down track. As I said before,I think I had an oiling problem, which I will make sure won`t happen again. As for the bent rods, hopefully lighter pistons will help keep them in the engine and not in the oil pan.

I don't know what happened but one thing BBB are know for is having a pretty good rod. I sprayed my 69' for years into the 10.40s and never hurt the motor. Shocking considering the thing was stock other than TRW pistons and bolt ons.

I think you had a case of hydraulic locked pistons. No marks on the head but he rod looks as if there should be? Did the top bearing look beat on, usually RPM and load damage is on the cap side.

STG2, The crank is black on the bottom of #3,6, and 7 rod journals. How would you know if the engine hydrauliced if it did not show the usual signs? I can`t remember it ever beeing hard to turn over or missfire, ect: Accually it started really easy. Better than I thought it would considering it was only 11 to 1 compression. By the way, #7 rod is the worst with the bearing completly gone!
