Is a small block and big block bell housing the same?

For the correct answer it depends on which engines you are call a small and a big block. So if you are comparing say a Buick 300 to say a 455 buick the answer is no.

Sorry my mistake. Jim is correct. The 350 and 455 will interchange. I dont know if the 300 will?

The 300 sb has the same bell housing pattern as the 455 & 350.
    The nailhead does not.

Pretty sure they are different part numbers.

The parts group number is 0.683. At least this is what I recall. Maybe someone can check this out.

I took the st-400 tranny from my 300 sbb & bolted it to my 455.
    Just sayin'.....

I just installed a 455 in my original GS 350 with 4 speed.
I also used the original 350 bellhousing and clutch linkage.

Thanks for the info guys. I just picked up a used buick bell and wanted to make sure it was going to work before I puchased it.

350,400, 430, 455 engines all use the same bell housing 1967-1975. It is part number 9785581. I recall the 300-340 and 215 engines used a different part number. It would be easy to verify one way or the other since the number is usually stamped on the inside of the bell housing.

The 300-340 has a BOP pattern, the 215 does not.

I understand that, but does a 300 -340 housing carry the same part number? For example, there could be a difference in the clutch fork area and not the ears.

They wouldn't be interchangable so wouldn't think part numbers would be the same... Stranger things have happened.

    Here's a 215 bell part # 1355746

    Here's a 64 300 part #

Part number 9774035 is what my research also shows for 300/340s. Apparently there is a diference in the starter housing configuration. This may be the one starter hump versus dual hump difference.

Iam not sure If all had the dual trans bolt pattern the gs ones had bolt holes drilled for the ford built three speed. I have seen some that had bosses cast in but not drilled for the three speed.Glenn

So will my turbo 400 off my 455 bolt up to my 340?

    Hi,

The 300 is a fully enclosed Bell with a small inspection cover (if you could call it that) vs. the newer 350/455 that has a large removable inspection cover and large opening on the bottom
any BOP (Buick, Olds, Pontiac)will bolt to any 300, 340, 350 400, 430 or 455 just have to make sure they are either Dual starter or have the correct starter side as they did come RH or LH depending on orginal application

The 215 is totally different as is a Nailhead Bell Housing as someone stated

    Regards,

11" clutch may not fit inside the 300 bellhousing behind a 455 - bolt patterns and length are the same

11" clutch will fit, no problem.
