local chevy guy has two trans for sale , a very nice lookin muncie ( that was checked and rebuilt by his brother - whom i know and trust ) and a new richmond t-10 ( the 2.88 first gear version ) . the $$ on the t-10 is fine . the question i have is on the muncie - he's lookin for about 700 . i know its not an m-22 and he says its an m-21 and i think he said 2.20 first gear . i just had a chance to look at it today for a few minutes and will recheck when more time in a day or two . it had course input splines and no rings/grooves . m-21 ? didn't have time to jot down numbers . the richmond was in the car ( never run - a barrett-jackson quality , eat off the frame , 555 dart pro stock short block and alum heads , dominator , moser 9 , etc etc , dark maroon 69 ss chevelle street car ) . he wants to step up to a richmond 5 speed . i wouldn't mind stepping up to that chevelle - very pretty car . buick or not it was memorable and i just looked at it for about 1 minute . del

    Del,

Hard to say if it's an M-21 or not. The brother has been thru the trans, so things may have been replaced. If you trust this guy, then take his word to the correct gearing. No way to check the gears if the trans is completely assembled. 2nd/3rd gears are the close ratio pieces, trans will work best with 3.55 and numarically higher gears. On a street driven car this will yield poor gas milage at best, also the motor will possibly be taken out of it's power band by generating higher RPM's.

The money seems to be right on the Muncie. M22's are getting $1400 for nice rebuilt units, the M20/21's are in the $500 - $800 range. Get a listing of all the new parts he used. Remember, the forward gears are about $90-$100 each. Typical rebuild will have all new syncros, small parts kit, 2nd/3rd/4th gears replaced (hence the price).

    Hope this helps,

    Jim

Have the guy with the muncie read you off all of the numbers on the trans & then post them on this thread & I or others will be able to tell ya what model muncie you have. From my experience, you want a later model Muncie w the 1 inch countershaft, they are stronger. BB Buicks have a lot of torque. The price seems a little high to me, I just got a 74' model Muncie (which is supposed to be the best) trans off ebay for about $400. Post the numbers & you'll get all the answers you need, Then watch muncie's on ebay & you'll see that $700 may be a little high.

When ID'ing a Muncie 4spd, the smart move is to pull the side cover & count the teeth on the cluster, also ck the countershaft pin hole on the front of the case. Is it 7/8" or 1"??? Try the old quarter trick... The '63- late 65 Muncie 4spds originally had no grooves in their coarse spline input shafts & "had" the weak clusters & 7/8" counter pin holes. Many of these early cases have stretched hole in the case. A local buddy & I have had quite a few of these early Muncie cases (usually the '64-mid '65 "325" cases) machined to accept the late '65-74 clusters.

When ID'ing Muncies one reason to never trust input shaft "rings or ID cuts", alone, is there have been various aftermarket input shafts made over the last 30 years. Not only were coarse spline early Muncie M22 input shafts made with no ID cuts, but some aftermarket concern made fine spline M21 input shafts, back in the '70's, with no cuts in the input shaft. Have had two of these replacement "no cut" finespline M21 shafts over the years & a few years back rebuilt a '67 M22 with a original coarse spline input.

    Hope this helps,
    Roger

thank you one and all . will catch up to him in a day or two and check trans out further - get #'s - and he said no problem to pulling off the side cover . i'm kinda leaning towards the richmond ( new ) but would have preferred the 2.43 geared choice i think . more strength . del

didn't have time to pull cover last pm but did get #'s . tail shaft #3846429 , case #3885010 , and the front pin size does appear to be the larger 1" size . he said that when they checked it out ( came out of the chevelle in question ) the guts looked new . they guessed that it was a factory or similar rebuilt unit . ? . may have a chance to pull cover this weekend . FYI : not worried about rpm range and gas mileage . a refreshing bit of fresh air in this day and age . del
