Does anyone have an ARP part number for a main stud set that's 1/4" longer than the regular 455 length.
I'm installing a Finishline halo girdle thats .360 thick and would like the additional length.

    Tom, just an FYI

Have you checked your oil pan for clearance with the halo girdle? Any halo's that I've installed need oil pan modifications in the front sump area. Just thought you should know if you don't already. :)

I called arp years ago trying to get longer studs as the halo I got fron PAE came with the same studs I got from Poston for a 455. It came with the studs, 2 sets of nuts, and 2 sets of washers. The only way I could possibly use it was if no washers were used and not bottom out the studs and use 3 threads of the top nuts if I could get the halo to sit even with the lower bolts. ARP told me they didn't have any that would work and must be custom made for I think $280. TA didn't have the size either. After talking to Burek he said to me as long the nuts are on a couple threads it's good.
However after a mockup the cap heights were all different up to 3/16"s. I detemined the caps should be either spotfaced to be at equal height or different washer spacers after the bolts are on so the halo isnt moving the webs around. Put it back in the box, haven't looked at it since.

Call Finishline, they should have the studs you need.

The halo may need some clearance for the rods. I think 1/2 and 7/8 rods had some interference on mine.

All the caps need the tops milled down so the girdle sits flat.

And Steve is right, the front of the pan needs to be cut and welded for clearance. It was a pain on mine because the clearance is needed right where all the different faces of the pan come together.

I figured as much. I was told many had been installed w/no issues and it should bolt right in (with a modded pan of course).

    Thanks Motorman,

I called up ARP tech assistance
The stock 455 stud kit is 4.7 " in length.
They individually sell 5" lengths (with the same short threads) Part # AR-5.00-1-SB @$6.09 each. As well 10 pacs of nuts and washers are available so you can make up your own kit.

    Ray

The caps have all been milled to the height of the lowest bolt face and then squared to an equal height of each other with an amount removed for a line hone.

    Steve & Dave
Finishline claims they have some of girdles installed with the 4.7" length studs and stock pans when using a stock stroke & length rods. I do have an old KB deep Pan thats had some reforming to clear Pontiac RA IV rods, so I give it a try first.
I 'm hopping to use this halo to help with the lower end Cap movement issues that I had at BG this year. See Pic beow of what Mains I was racing on. One main pounded but fortunately didn't spin. Rest of the motor looked good.

When I ran a halo, I just looked ARP's catalog and ordered the length I needed. I may have the part number at home. As mentioned, a stock pan won't clear it. I dropped the front of my pan about 3/4" or so to clear.

I used ARP Olds Diesel studs when I built my halo girdles. Had to buy them in 5 two packs of the longer ones in the kit. The kit will not work because some of the studs are shorter.

    ARP part # ARP-184-5402

Ooops, that # is in correct, but you do need the long studs from this kit and they do sell them in packs of 2..

Finally ended up using studs from a 351 Cleveland for a tad more length.

Yes and no. As Steve pointed out the front area does need modification.
With some pounding using a dolly and bodyworking tools I was able to get it real close. Still working on it.
I kinda like my old baffled Kenne Bell deepened stock pan for nostalgia reasons, although I'm still contemplating a fabricated pan with external pickup line if I go with a Scavenger oil system.
One way or the other I post a pic of what I did with the stocker pan when I'm done.

Could not some sort of oil pan spacer be fabricated the same thickness as the halo?

    Cody,

See thread I have a thread under Members Rides http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=208330

    Dean,

To add a spacer I would think you would also need to fab some filler pieces for the front and rear of the pan also. I think you would otherwise have 2 pretty good gaps to fill will sealer.
I 've got the stocker style pan to fit now. Just need to trim the height of the front two studs. That's where the last bit of interference is coming from.

Pics of what it took to get the stocker pan to clear the halo.

The front studs had to be trimmed flush. I should have done this first it would have saved some pounding time.

Most of the work involved bashing out the dimple areas (Where the 3 faces join) and stud height clearance.

A pic between a stock and moddded pan.

The bearing in your pics look more like a oil issue than caps walking. the caps on my motor move around and the outside edges wear not the whole surface wearing flat like yours even the thrust bearing in your pic looks like it needed more oil like bearing clearance was to tight .

Any how the halo looks great :TU: I need to start a new build soon with a gridle

I think you're right. D7 Cook said he smoked his mains the same way when ran tight clearances. This time I'm going .0025 on the 1st 4 mains and .003 on #5.

Attached is a pic through the cylinder bore showing an inside view as to how the Halo sits inside with the modded pan.
