Is it stealing if a worker sees you doing it and does nothing? In CA its if its over 900 dollars of stuff. But stores that put self checkout stands know that people are going to miss a few items. Wrecking yards and self checkout stands I see as places you can get your moneys worth. If you are buying stuff, the profit is still more than the loss of an item or two. Plus there not paying a checker per regrister for self checkout.

Yes. It's still stealing. The fact that a lazy/incompetent worker chooses to ignore or is forbidden from acting on it doesn't make it any better.

Knowingly taking merchandise from a store without paying for it is theft. Period. Continuing to try to rationalize it will make many here question your character that haven't already.

I've left more than one cart full at more than one grocery store and it may or may not have had frozen or whatever in it. Open a register and I'll buy. I need a smiling individual that tells me thank you and did I find what I needed to complete my shopping experience. I do probably 90% of our grocery shopping and there are several stores I quit because I had to leave the cart more than once. I'm not wasting my time filling the cart if they aren't going to have that smiling employee to scan, ask of I have a rewards card and tell me to insert my card into the payment kiosk. I don't even mind sacking my own but it is painful for those waiting behind me.
I do my shopping on Sunday afternoon and it is glorious if the cowboys are playing as the crowd is sparse and that makes it way easier to do my shopping.
Self checkout, not for me. As above I don't work there.

I consider side jobs by my employees theft as well.

I'd think returning perishables to their respective places would be the good citizen thing to do if you're going to do that.

I had a boss that tried that one on me. I told him at the time he hired me i already have word of mouth customers wifes coworkers and jobs from automotive side jobs that lead to hvac work. I told him I never except jobs (while in uniform or from your customers. ) that is the only valid point any boss has.

it is easier to steal when you use the self serve at the grocery store. sometimes the item reads but then does not get registered on the belt and you can hear the scanner undo the price and tell you to put item on belt and at that point you can steal it. But why? Next week the item will cost you another 20 cents..on that item then the next and the next.

Yeah in Cali you can basically steal about 899$ worth of stuff and walk out isn't that a nice way to give to the less fortunate? what ? are you kidding me

Leaving a full cart in the isle because someone could not wait to get checked out.
now I have just picked up spoiled food from the I don't give a crap worker that just put it back on the shelf
Yeah that is a good person, idiot.

Probably the same one that rides my butt in the left lane on highway because I am in front of you and 80 is not fast enough OHH I see you just need to get in front of me
my rant for day don't like it.. to d bad

With covid regulations I wouldn't be surprised if abandoned food is thrown away. Either way it's a dick move. I completely get the self check out rant, but couldn't you have noticed the empty registers as you walked in and left then? All you're doing is creating more work for the guy who is already busy. You're not sticking it to the company, you're screwing a guy who has no say in the policy.

Like I said above... Wife works in Publix and she says its unbelievable how much food gets thrown in the garbage everyday. Anything that leaves the store and comes back gets tossed regardless.

Side jobs in a competing area and line of work is unethical but I don't know that I'd go so far as theft.

Side jobs that have nothing to do with your primary line of business should be fair game. If you do HVAC and the employee has an after-hours side job doing lawns and landscaping, I don't see that as an issue.

Ya not where I was going with that but... If I had a guy that was using my truck / tools and supplies to do side work on the weekend or after hours.

Yes, I would have a problem with that as well. Especially, if your name/business is on the side of the truck.

If it's in the line of work that you pay them to do, I agree with you. If it's on their time and not in their day job line, I applaud their ambition.

I totally agree Jim. For the record, Exxon and Shell opened their refineries in Aruba and Curacao respectively decades ago, specifically because they were afraid (probably correctly) that at some point, the corrupt Venezuelan government would nationalize ((steal) them.
For the record: The whole point of opening a business is to make money. I don't hate the oil company of which I am a part owner; I enjoy depositing the dividend checks that they send me. Think Kroger makes too much money? Raise your own beef and vegetables.

I will try to steer this back to the O.P.s question!

I very much dislike self-checkout for several reasons....As a business owner I completely get efficiency & highest possible profit margin, but at some point for stores like Wal-Mart for example, I think they need to weigh some of that against customer service & personal interaction with those customers.

What has made me mad a few times @ Wal-Mart is when I do use the self-checkout, (because the 3 actually human checkout lanes were packed) I then get asked at the door if they can "See my receipt" My answer is always the same! With a smile on my face & in a friendly voice I say " No thank you, I am fine. If you wanted to see my receipt, you should have had a register open & rang me out" As I am walking out the door & by the way, I never steal anything...I don't need to!

Am I going to stop going to Wal-Mart...NO! Do I wish they had more human check out lines open...YES!

    God Bless

This is the same company that used to advertise that it there were more then three people waiting in line at a register, they would open another lane.

To add another $0.02 contribution to this rather interesting thread, my local grocery store is an independently owned part of a national chain. Its owners live in, and are quite active in the neighborhood. They recently renovated their store, and are now repaving the parking lot. There's NOT ONE self serve checkout, nor am I aware of any plans for them. Many of their staff are local high school teens. I used to split my grocery shopping 50/50 between them and another slightly more distant store. Now most of my business will go to them.

WallyWorld has a store a few miles from me, but I'm not due for my annual visit until 2022.:D
