Does anyone know for sure where the hidden VIN info is on a 64 skylark convertible? I know of the door pillar, and the motor numbers, but there is supposed to be additional numbers stamped on the frame and body I think. If it is too rusty to see, is there a way to draw out the numbers with some kind of chemical agent? thanks

Hey thanks, have looked there best as I can, might be too rusty to see anymore. Couldn't find them. Any kind of agent that might draw the numbers out of the rust?

Talk to your local law enforcement. They have all the locations. Depending on year, the VIN can be in as many as 7 places. A word to the wise...

I've never looked but I've been told from several different sources that a vin is stamped in the sheet metal behind the heater box on the outside of the firewall. You must take the box off to find it.

And are those sources Buick or Chevrolet related?

    Buick related.
Depending on the year/plant you will find a partial vin number on the firewall behind the heater box.

There is no link in my post, it is simply underlined.

I don't know what answer you are looking for from Bill but I have personally seen many partial vin numbers stamped under the heater covers on 70 A-body Buicks that we have parted out.

They are just like the partial vin numbers stamped on the engine blocks, ie "40H123456" (Buick, Last digit of model year, production plant, consecutive 6 digit vin number)

If you are looking for some type of link I can't help you. If you want the answer I just gave it to you.

As far as the vin number stamped on the frames.............they are usually stamped so lightly that even after you take the body off the frame and clean up/blast the area, they are often impossible to read. Most people simply verify the frame by the date code and part number.

My 70 bamboo cream car as well as the Maggot (70 built in flint) both have the vin stamped in behind the AC box on the firewall..So, it's a Buick thing..
I have parted several 70-72 cars with the same thing as well..

There are other numbers stamped into many of the seperate body panels that people often think are vin numbers.

Fisher Body often used the base 5 digit body number to code the panels, and on A-body buicks they are often the base skylark number. You will see these numbers on the rear tulip panels, a-piller posts, etc.

Have removed the heater box and can't find any numbers. I did find the frame manufacturers number on the rear driver frame rail close to the rear bumper. It doesn't look like a VIN, and at the end of the string is a circle with an S in it. Anyone have a 64 parts book with frame manufacturers numbers. Have looked on the top rail of the frame under drivers door, from the parts I can see there is no number or too rusty. The frame manufacturers number is very clear though, and so is the date code below it. Also have found a number code that Duane spoke of on the tulip in the trunk. If it has hidden VIN's they really are because I can't find them. :0)
