    Um, slow? j/k!

I suspect they weren't real concerned about such information for an Electra back in the day.

Most of the elderly, polished gentlemen who were able to buy those cars new didn't give a damn about 1/4 mile times. However, if you look on U-Tube, you'll find some Electras blowing the doors off the competition, and I seem to recall I saw one set of times in one of those clips as 13.9 on a '66 Electra 4-door sedan which dusted an IROC.

Buick never published quarter mile times on any of their cars during the 60s. They were not permitted by GM management to be involved with anything having to do with racing or supporting racing at that time.

I asked the question a while back, "Who races Electras?", and it was surprising what results I got back. Apparently people do, and win.

Try and find some "Motor Trend" or "Car and Driver" articles from '69 and '70; they might have probably put one through it's paces and reported on it. Especially the 1970 Buick, just because of the new 455 engine that was introduced then. The Wildcat of the day was a slightly smaller car, had the same engine, but still came in over 4000 lbs, so the numbers on one of those would be close. However, by 1970, Electra usually came with a highway axle ratio, and no performance options, so if they tested a Wildcat it would have probably had a better axle ratio, and the posted times would be significantly better than the run-of-the mill Electra.

i dont get it. why do so many people get so excited about wildcat performance and blow off thee electra. im certinly not an expert but the rear gear seems like the only big difference as weight was similar??????? 1970 455 was similar if not the same, tranny and converter the same ,same rochester or similar.........with a good rebuild and cam followed by a strong converter i think ill be respectable soon. going to the track soon after the thaw and if im talking out my A ill come clean, marty

With a 5000 plus pound Electra it would take nearly 600 horsepower to turn a 12 flat in a quarter. This is assuming you the other issues covered like tires, posi, converter etc. If the car is going to have a cam ok for street use, you are likely going to need some ported TA heads, headers and some Franklin brothers.

Here is some data to give you a feel for the times big cars run. I think Scotty's Electra went high 11s but took 700-800 horsepower to do that.

No one is saying an Electra can't be fast, they simply aren't fast in stock form.

No, they usually weren't blistering off the line, but on the highway, they are nice. These old Electras have legs! Passing manoevers in the mountains are especially fun; - what modern car do you know that will actually accelerate going up hill? I surprised the hell out of one clown in a brand new Hemi Dodge pickup on one such manoever, he thought he could keep up to me passing this train of RVs, and I left him eating dust. When we pulled into the same gas station together he told me he had his truck floored as he watched my taillights disappear. There aren't too many cars that can catch me at highway speeds, and that Buick torque insures that it stays that way. I've surprised a lot of people with my big boat, they would never have believed that an "old man's" car could go so fast on the highway unless they saw it themselves. A few of my Chevy buddies are looking at Buicks now just because of what my stock Buick can do...they're thinking if the stock car is this fast, imagine what a hopped up one can do.
Never discount an old Electra, it may surprise you with what it can do.

I read a Motor Trend magazine article from way back when and at the track they used a sundial to time its performance run.

Haha, funny! Those guys talk like they are from the Stuttgart area, and the Firebird driver claims his throttle is having some delay, and that is the reason the Buick is faster. ;)

I think I even know where this was filmed.

Actually if some one took one and put some stiff gears under it and set the chassis up right,,,, they would hold their own with any other car in its wt. class....
Like the boat tail that was at BG running in the 9s....

i pulled up to a light tonight in my 30 sec electra and after that a mustamg pulled up convertible also granted he was stock as i could see and hear. i asked him if he saw my exhaust system as he pulled up and he looked quite pod so the light changed and i left him in a cloud of smoke to the next light. now when he pulled up i asked again did he see my pipes, this time he got it and was quite pod to be beaten by my 30 second electra.....moral of the story ithout the chips some new cars arent that impressive given their light weight and by the way i have figured out how to get the front end up. off the ground......2 jackstands and a camera
