I have fresh cast iron Stage1 heads, but I'm building a little lightweight car, and want to get as much weight as I can off the nose.
Plus other performance benefits that comes with the aluminum.

I've been waiting for a year and a half for my 71. I guess I'll stay focus on my 73 getting it ready for the 50th year anniversary.

    Guys,
Try Searchtempest.com It will search Craigslist in all of the USA or more. I was able to find a TA front cover and roller rockers a while back in Minnesota (I am in Florida) and had a buddy buy them for me and ship them down. Also search older threads for people that upgraded to stage 2 or higher heads that may have still their old set. That is how I found my Stage 1 SE's. Happy hunting!!

    Hi Folks,

I have brand-new set of Second Generation (the last/best) Bulldog heads. Purchased from the "other Jim,' then sent directly to Greg Gessler.

He had never ported Bulldogs before. He corrected the several known problem areas: he opened up the oil drain-back holes, and relocated one hole for the alternator bracket. This Second Generation did NOT have an issue w/ a thin casting around the dipstick tube. Then, after he was done, they were sent to Calico Coatings. Everything that could be coated, WAS coated!

The valves were coated, the combustion chambers were coated, and the exhaust ports were coated--to maintain heat in the port instead of transferring it to the head. They coated the valve springs and the spring seats, upper valve retainer, and even the split locks.

Gessler always admonished everybody NOT to compare flow rates, as flow benches vary somewhat widely, and even the interpretations/accuracy can, of course vary.

Gessler had done my cast-irons back in '91. At that time he told me they were the highest-flowing head he'd ever ported, even a bit better than the heads he'd done for his good friend, Rob Chilenski, who was running some "evil" times w/ those heads

Those cast-irons flowed, as I recall, 185@.500 on exhaust, and 270-285 (can't remember, but have paperwork somewhere) @500 on intake.

These Bulldogs, after his Level 2 porting/polishing, flow 310/185 @.500 and 319/195 @ .600. I have the paperwork for these. This was all done 9/2006.

I paid Gessler a little over $3100 at that time ($4400 in today's dollars). I can't find the receipt from Calico Coatings, though I have a commercial account there and they should be able to find it. In any case, I'm pretty sure the coating they did would be at least $1000 today, and prolly more w/ all this inflation going on (NOT Biden's fault, so don't get political!).

Since their debut, a few guys have been able to really tweak those exhaust ports; I know Gary (Thumper) and John Z. have gotten pretty decent exhaust numbers, tho I don't know if they had to do a bit of welding in order to re-contour the ports?

Since then I've aged and, thus, lost lotta testosterone since I started this build--way back then. I know these heads are WAY more than I need. I have a set of '73 heads that I could freshen up and use.

    I have two not-insurmountable problems--actually, 3 problems.

I don't know what these heads are now worth. They are already installed on the car, and I'm getting kinda old to swap them--especially w/ a coupla those onerous header bolts--and finally, I have bad R/A so it's damn hard for me to work on cars.

Anywho, I hadn't really thought much about selling them till I saw this thread. I am a retired professor from the Univ. of South Carolina, and was a card-carrying member of Richard's Buick GS Club for years, attending 4 Nationals in the glory days of the mid-1990s! Damn sad dem days is gone, never to return!

Thanks for reading, and am open to any/all thoughts, ideas, and profanity!
