Has anyone updated there stock steering box on their A-Body? I looked at the AGR 12:1 unit? Any input would be very helpful.

    thanks,
    John

Doo Wop Where were you in '62?

I think I would look for a GM "quick ratio" box myself, for your A-Body. They work Jim Dandy Fine.

    What year is your car?

I bought a rebuilt 87 GN F41 box at Advance Auto Parts and put the Lee's kit in it. Works great but the old power steering pump is leaking. Not their fault. Another thing to consider is to take the pressure relief valve out and remove all the shims to increase the pressure for the newer style boxes.

Red Head Steering Gears is where I ordered my custom gear from. They built it to my specs and the turnaround was really fast. Their prices were very respectable for a custom unit. Be careful with the auto parts store unit as you never really know what you are getting. Companies the rebuild them for the auto stores seek to have a nasty habit of using a wide range of cores for different applications which can lead to unpredictable results such as too little output shaft deflection for our steering geometry.

I got one of The Parts Place quicker ratio ones and I'm happy with it. It bolted in 100% stock & no core charge.

I've written about 3-4 times about replacing the sterring box on my '65. '87 GN box from a Yard, $35. That was 5-6 Years ago and it still works fine.

Ponch, Did you do any modification to the p/s pump at all? or just install the box.

    thanks

I had to take the pressure side hose to a hydraulic shop and get the fitting changed to Metric. $10. Also a larger Dia. rag joint. $5.

I used my Pittman Arm. I took it to a local shop. He took the old one off and put mine on. Bolted it back up and I was all set.

Sent my original box pitman arm on it to Chip at power steering services in Missouri. Rebuilt all internals to quick ratio and set stops. Don't have to change anything and at the time was cheaper than another box.

if its the same as a 70-72 abody just go to the local parts house and order a stock quick ratio one for a chevelle
no mods needed bolts in 12.5 to 1 i think
dont waste your time doing unneeded mods

I think spending 50-60 Bucks on a complete set-up is better than just going up to a parts store and ordering a new box. What's the cost for a new One? The ones I see in catalogs are 300 + or -. But then you Know it works, unlike getting a box from a yard, install it and it doesn't work. I guess it's Your choice and Your money. :TU: Flip a Coin.

I'd guess you need the one from an 80's pickup truck if your stock one doesn't work. I got mine from Lee's since I used a GN box and had to have the hose fittings.
