    Hello everyone,

My 68 Skylark has a 8.2" axle with a 2 series carrier. I would like to go with 3 series gears. would the spacer for 3 series gears be the same for any GM carrier? In Summit they advertise a BOP spacer for this purpose. However, I have been told that BOP does not necessarily mean it is for a Buick when dealing with rings and pinions. Does anyone know if this spacer would work? I realize theat a posi would be a better option, but that can come later.

    Thanks for your replies.

I have been told that the 8.2 spacer is the same for bop and chevrolet applications. i have not tested this theory yet but i do know that my buddy was able to bolt his chevy 8.2 ring gear on my buick 8.2 carrier. so that means at least the bolt pattern is the same.

    spacer

yes, the 10 bolts chevy 8.125 and bop 8.2 ring gear spacers are the same . i have installed a couple of these , but i would advise buying bolts that are slightly longer than the ones supplied in the kits. from experience the one supplied are just too short and will pull out . since they only grab a few threads.

Thanks allot for the replies :)

Now how about the ring and pinions sets that are advertiesed as BOP in Summit? It seams like I read somewhere else on this sight that these are not necessarly for a Buick even though I thought the "B" stands for Buick.

    Thanks
    Mike

Call Richmond Gears in Liberty SC. I think they will tell you they will not fit your application.

This issue has been discussed many times in the past. Search the posts posts of Board member OPH. He is a resident rear gear expert. He has addressed this as I recall explaining the confusion.

    richmond gears

i have bought two sets of the richmond gears from summit for the 8.2 bop rear . one set went in a '67 and another in a '66 parts # 's rmg-4900841(3.90) and rmg 6903581 (4.11)no problems .these gears have been creeping up in price , both summit and northern auto parts are around $250-$270 a set -ouch. to put these gears on a 2.56-3.23 carrier ya'll have to run the spacer .

those gears fit 64-67 buick 8.2 they do not fit 68-70 buick 8.2 rears only option for 68-70 is good used gears or switching to an 8.5 rear. i personally would attempt to locate a 71 bop 8.5 rear. it uses the easy to find 8.5 posi carrier and there are tons of gears available for them. plus the 71 bop version uses bolt in axles instead of C clips

The correct spacer to use with the 68-70 Buick 8.2” 10-bolt is the 908A. This is the spacer for the 8.5” 10-bolt. It has the same bolt spacing, bolt size, and inner diameter as the 68-70 8.2” Buick. However, you might need to get it milled to get the correct spacing to keep the carrier centered in the housing. This will require a shop with a magnetic table to hold it for milling. Been there done that.
