Hi everybody. Will the stock 8.2 in my 69 gs survive launching with drag radials? 400 with mild cam and 2000 stall. Thanks

the axles on an 8.2 are very very close to the axles used in the 8.5. in fact you can put 8.2 axles into an 8.5......even though the splines are not 100% correct. in fact they are just enough off that the 8 .5 axles wont go into the 8.2.

Should be fine but go easy on it the two series Posi is not as strong as a three series.

Pretty sure from the MANY part outs I have done in te 68 -70. 273 -293 and 3.23 -3.42 and 3.64 -4.30 and beyond are all 4 SPIDER GEAR 2 SIDE GEAR UNITS also KNOW AS THE SUPER DUTY POSI Units in the 68-70 era.
The early 1964-1967.... they had the single bar cross shaft (.795 Diameter ) with the 2 spider and 2 side gear units for the 3.23 and more freeway geared rears and the very early even had whimper units which only had 6 bolts holding the cases together and smaller cross shaft ( .733ish diameter) that the spider gears spun on. PLUS the case at the ends where the bearings are installed were cast windows through into the cone area to let fresh fluid flow, BUT really just weakened the case structure.
There were many upgrades to the 8.2 Pontiac posi units By the time 68-70 BUICK only 8.25 rear rolled out they only used the good design unit in that rear where the driver side bearing was bigger and the pass side was stock 10 bolt size.
Just giving out the info for you...

Thank you everybody for the info. I'm not near as worried about playing at the track now. Thanks Bruno, but I'm not planning on changing gears yet. I really like the way this thing cruises on the highway and is still able to smoke the street tires from a roll. This is my first Buick and I love it!

Great highway gear, I put a 71 skylark together back in 1985 with parts I had laying around standard 73 455 non Stage 1 90,000 miles out of LeSabre but a KB 118 cam headers, stock distributor Advance to where the car was just about to start, 70 stage 1 carb, fuel pump, stock turbo 350 2.93 Posi G 60 street tires car ran 13.60'si at 101 only shifted in to third gear going through the lights.

Donnie, I believe you are correct... I think too many people try to over tune these cars and ruin them. Usually with nothing more than a little birt of gear and a stock came the car will ALWAYS feel stout ...it may not run the numbers at the track...BUT it sure feels like a rocket. :D
I have a Big Block Chevy with a 272 crane HMV cam 212 duration at .050 and it just blisters the ground with street tires when it had 3.31 3.55 and now 3.73.... I like the 3.55 it was the best combo with Overdrive for my personal likes. 3.31 was max for the street driving with out overdrive trans....THAT IS my personal feel on driving....Everyone has there own limits and that is why it is hard for every one to tell another what gear is best for them.... You can only give an experience and example and let people make a good educated guess.

Yep no doubt. Several years ago I had a 66 fairlane with a 302, alum heads, and a big solid cam with 4.10 gears and a 3500 stall. It ran 12.70's with slicks, but I enjoy driving this car so much more.

    BUQUICK I'm your huckleberry.

I think you will be fine Donnie. I've been running a '67 8.2" 10-bolt that does NOT have the HD posi, in a 4,000 lbs Buick with sticky tires for over 20 years and it has several hundred passes with 60' times in the 1.65-1.75 range (e.t.s 11.8 -12.2) and it's never broken anything while racing.
