72 Skylark Sun Coupe 350 4bbl. Automatic. Looking for some cam/converter/ gearing tips for stock appearing on bias ply tires. Have the original motor and a complete 68 GS 350. Shooting for 13’s and staying under 5500 rpm.

@Tom Miller built the baddest stock appearing 350, search for his old thread. Maybe he’ll chime in with a link.

Do you intend to drive it at 70 mph plus on the highway? If not I would do a 3.73 gear, 3200 stall, if yes then a 3.42 gear. Mild head porting and a TA-212 cam with an actual 10:1 compression, q jet redone by mark at q power or Ken at everyday performance. Headers if you can, 2.5” magnaflow exhaust.

    Thank you!
Will be a local beach cruiser, limited highway cruising, can trailer to races. Will 10.2 compression with a 212 cam work with pump gas? Trying to hit the sweet spot for dynamic cylinder pressures and not have to run race fuel. No headers allowed in the series I will be running. Planning to use stock intake and mild porting.

Yes 10:1 is fine with that cam. I think they are sold out currently but Scotty Browb can grind you a custom one for the same $.

4.10 gears will help if that’s not causing you an issue on the highway? Head porting would be a huge jump forward. Are the $2800 TA alum heads in the budget? If so a 3.73 gear would be plenty and you could easily get into the 12s with Manifolds I’m sure.

@sean Buick 76 he's wanting to run the car in a "pure stock" class so he has to keep the iron intake, iron heads, and iron exhaust manifolds stock appearing.

I'm not sure if anyone is still porting stock exhaust manifolds, but that will be a crucial piece to making the engine breathe.

Check with TA, I know they had 430/455 cam blanks come in, they might have also gotten 350 blanks too. The 212 is a great cam to work with the 218 intake duration is short enough to land the intake close right where you want it for optimal DCR. There are calculators out there to mock up where you should degree it too . Be sure you CC the heads, ID and thickness of headgasket , how deep in the hole and CC of the dish as you get the components together.

Hopefully tearing down the motor this weekend to see what I have. Is supposed to be a 68 GS 350 with 40k that was professionally upgraded to 70 315 horse specs and then sat on a engine stand for 15 years.

it'll be interesting to see how far in the hole those pistons are, and what the dish looks like. I dont have any info on what you should hope to see, but the guys on the 350 forum will give more advice than you're looking for.

Pistons were .060 down. Small dish. Motor was rebuilt but sitting 15 years hurt it. Condensation rust throughout. Pistons seized on pins, stuck lifters, rust in cylinder bores, moldy head gasket. Rebuildable but not ready to run. Soaked everything with my special rust eating mixture.

Don’t worry, the Buick engine will live again! Might have to put my 12 second sbc motor in it TEMPORARILY to be able to run it this summer though. If I paint it red and put a Buick air cleaner on it will I still be allowed on this board?

My rust cleaning mixture worked perfectly on the cam. The rust wiped off with no pitting. The cam is marked PE and gs113. It was installed but not run. Anybody run this Poston cam? Looking to run deep 13’s stock appearing need to be around 350 horse. Will have proper converter compression and gearing. Is this enough cam?

Update on the Sun Coupe. Picked up a 72 Buick 350 with 69k miles and a TA 4 bbl kit as a drop in for this summer.
Also snagged a 73 455 to build for later.
And a 200R4. And a 4:10 posi rear, Rally wheels, and a correct console and floor shifter. Hope to run a few events with it for the 2024 season.
