I have a 72 Skylark (350 2 barrel). When I really hit the gas hard, it hesitates for a second and then goes full power into accelerating. It's done this for a while, even before the new parts I will list. I have a new carburetor, fuel pump, fuel filter, ignition coil and condenser, spark plugs / wires, distributor cap and rotor, and new timing chain and the timing was set properly. I did try some tuning of the idle speed as well, but no change. I'm open to thoughts, thanks! Ben
Couldn't that be the accelerator pump, not giving enough juice? Have you tried moving the arm, so you get a bigger squit?
Yes I agree wit Soren, that sounds like a likely accelerator pump issue. If the carb is "new" then the pump cup is likely ok, and an adjustment might be the ticket...
What distributor (part number) and initial timing are you running? When was the last time the carburetor was rebuilt?
I had this issue and adjusted it away. Carb throttle, mixture screws or timing is my guess. It will do it in the driveway when you open the throttle plates, right?
Thanks, everyone! How do I adjust it to have a bigger shot of the mixture? Unfortunately, I don't know how to answer the question of what timing I'm running Here's the distributor that's on it: https://www.autozone.com/ignition-t...gold-ignition-rotor-kit-dr2028g/27785_0_45590 Here's the carburator that's on it: https://www.autozone.com/fuel-deliv...buretors-carburetor-1-255/168807_1045038_6334 I appreciate your help! Ben
I did not know this was avail from Autozone, the carb that is. Being an Autozone unit, would not be surprised the carb may not be working correctly. If you have it still I'd send out your old one and have it done over by a rebuilder. Return the Autozone unit.
What you get from Autozone is from Carburetor remanufacturers, quite possibly the worst option for you. They make carburetors from piles of parts, calibrate them with a generic tune. All points distributors look the same from the outside. What you linked is the cap and rotor. That doesn't tell me anything. What I need is the actual part number stamped into the outside of the distributor circumference. That may tell me the advance calibration, and what the initial timing should be.
If you choose to rebuild you orig carb I used these guys for mine, the same 2 brrl you have. https://www.allamericancarburetor.com/ They have a LONG lead time as of earlier this summer. Took me 7 weeks from when I mailed to when I got it back. But you can get it redone for 225 I think it was with a lifetime warranty included in that cost and they do not just throw new gaskets at it. Also tested and set close to factory on a live motor, no bench testing.
