Bill said $30 just to weld the tubes but 250 total with parts narrowed to any size, weld on Ford ends with gm bolt pattern. He said I do it all the time for G bodies! He said yes 30 spline.
You can use an old drum. Reverse it around and thread a few lug nuts on, then use it like a slap hammer. It can be tough sometimes, but they will come out.
Got um! I have an old slide hammer from work with a broken handle and a 2 hole mount. Only had the adaptor on with a couple of threads but they came right out. Its got 16 and 41 teeth which is 2.56.
8.5 "corporate" differential unit was phased in beginning in 71 model year. 8.5 in has a more "round" cover than 8.2 in , and has "ears" in bottom of center section casting at aprox 7 and 5 oclock, looking at unit from behind.
Should I have this axle dipped at the strip shop or just blast it and clean the inside with rags and race gas or solvent? When I measure the ring gear it measures less than 8.50 from tooth to tooth.
Just saw this,I have a buddy with a G body rear in a 71 skylark ,might be looking for a sale or trade .I can ask if you want more info! Lemme know
I pmed that guy back with what I had and no reply so I'm getting ready to stich weld on top first. On a Millermatic 210 what level of power, 1-7 and what wire speed with .030 wire? Also what motion works best here. C, Figure 8, push pull, pull push or other.
I would advise against welding the tubes without a thru bar in place or at least the ends and center held down , I know the tubes are thick on these rears but IF it does pull and not return its gonna cause all sorts of issues. But you want the heat on high and speed as fast as possible without kicking back obviously, and I roll it side to side with emphasis on the cast iron
Too late already done. I stitched 1-2" at a time, letting it cool, going 180 around and stitching 1-2" from side to side letting it cool each time. It looks straight looking through it but will put a straight edge in there to see if I can tell if it's crooked.
The older GM rears have crazy thick tubes an engage pretty deep in the center section so more than likely its fine, do that to a 8.8,7.5, or late model 8.5 and They WILL pull around on you
Ok I would like to get this thing together cheap for now just to get it in the car. I don't have enough power to hurt it right now and will change it later when that happens. Does anyone have a posi carrier and a 3.73 gear to put in this with 28 spline axles? Or a 30 spline carrier and axles with stock axle bearings?
