72 GSX Stage1 4 Speed

    Thanks guys. Ripped the front guts out of the car today.

    Since I have not dabbled in 4 speed stuff, I have a tech question. How do I stop this leak? It is coming from the splined section at the yoke. The outer seal is not leaking.

    had a similar problem on a pinion yoke on a 12 bolt, lube passing by splines , placed a small amount of rtv on splines near seal and hasn't leaked since, cars coming along nicely, nice job

    What the hell kind of yoke is that?? Odd Looks like its from a 4x4 or something. Plus its not supposed to have an open end That would explain the leak! :D Muncies take an automatic trans style yoke. Looks like its a fine spline? If so, it will take a turbo 400 style yoke. I wonder if the driveshaft is right? I think the shaft is supposed to be 54 1/2?? I'll have to check the assembly manual tomorrow for you

    Driveshaft was not currently in the car. Someone has confirmed that this is the wrong yoke already...looking for another one now.

    Did some cleaning to prep for a splash of black paint on the firewall and dash. I found the original yellow sticker on the steering box...not much of it left, but it’s rare to see one still there.

    Still need to clean up some of the frame/steering components, but the firewall and dash are ready to go. It's hard to tell in this photo, but there is a slight gloss difference between the top of the dash and the cowl forward of the windshield.

    What did you use to clean?

    I scrubbed with lacquer thinner the other day and this is the best I could do.

    Several different things. Chemically, brake clean and lacquer thinner. Thankfully, this part of the steering box was not really covered up, so I just wiped around where it needed it to preserve the sticker.

    As opposed to what it may seem, this project is supposed to be nothing more than a paint job...not a nut and bolt restoration. I’ve had to go a bit deeper than originally planned, though. I am doing what I can to keep as many original pieces and parts as I can.

    I get it. I'd like to continue to utilize the elbow grease method a bit more to sort of bring things "back to life".

    I feel like detailing the engine bay as best you can (and we all know how meticulous you are regarding that) using that tried and true method might be sufficient on an original car.

    I had to pull the exhaust manifolds off the engine and recoat them, also to repaint the engine. It had been sitting for a while and I wanted to make sure the mice hadn't made their homes in the exhaust side of the heads. Bolted them back on and tossed it back in the car this evening...

    I can usually only get an hour or 2 every evening to work on car stuff...so I have to make the most of it.

    When I got the car, it had the inner front wheel houses removed and they were already painted. Unfortunately, they had been scratched up pretty badly from being hauled around and handled...so I had to repaint. I did the core support at the same time. Once that was all complete, I could install the fenders. Starting to look like a car again!

    I had to try out a little section of paint to see how it was going to look once cut and buffed. I hate walking into the garage and seeing orange peel. Can't wait to get the whole car looking like a mirror!

    After doing some assembly in the engine compartment, I decided it was priority to continue on body work. So the trunk lid got stripped today. The hood is already stripped...just needs cleaned up and to have that dent in the from worked out a bit.

    Hood and trunk lid are in high build. Glass guy is coming Tuesday to install front and rear windows, so I installed new trim clips. I still need to clean the goobers off the rear window.
