Here we go! Why is there 2 different options on the sheen? I would think the satin black would be correct from the factory.

I don't remember which one I got. But I got it from Legendary. As in my text to you earlier, as far as the seams are concerned, I bought the top from Legendary and gave it to my installer. I told him where I needed the rear seams to be, and they were installed in the correct location when I picked it up. I have a feeling there is some adjustability in them.

We checked ours from Legendary. Only opening its up and can see the width on lower seem is farther apart then the roof seams. Will know more after installer arrives.

The original tops have a different seam width below the back window than the seams across the top of the roof.

Out of the two options can I assume GM vinyl tops were a satin finish not gloss?

GM had the new "wet look" vinyl tops for 1972. I assume that that would be somewhat of a gloss.

Thanks for your follow-up! Think I will be looking into the satin, the gloss magnifies imperfections in roof sheet metal, and really shows imperfections in padding when installed.

    Seams matched up.

Notice that on the front posts the bottom section overlaps the top section. Seems counter to what you would expect to see but that's how GM/Fisher Body did it.

Here are some more photos of an original top.

That seam was heat sealed so it wasn't any concern for water intrusion,...the fact that it wasn't porous and sweat like a whore in church was the bigger issue ha

If I get a vinyl top car, I would go with paint instead. As much as I like VT's, I would rather have paint...

After 52 years, the vinyl top is still the nicest part of my car..I can't seem to get the will power to tear it off! There is no rust or rot under it either..Garaging surely saved it..

Seems be the nicest part of mine too and seemingly no rust underneath. Maybe it's something about those green tops Pat:).

Interesting - I'd love to buy something newer and not have to pay what SMS wants. Will have to search or maybe get a hold of the manuf. & see who they sell it to. Thanks!

    Dano,
Hartz sells to everybody. They are the only manufacturer of that grain vinyl top material. At least they used to be.

Some companies just get special runs in the colors they want.
