Did all 72 Skylark/GS cars have the plastic "cover" that held the shoulder belt, or did some come with the 2 metal wire holders on the headliner that kept the belts exposed? Hope that makes sense. This is a deluxe interior car I'm working on Thanks, Ronnie.

I have a 72 Skylark, deluxe interior sitting here without the plastic. Very early Fremont car. They must have switched over?

Interior option or maybe mid-year change, Duane will know.

No, all '72 A-body 2-door cars did not come with the plastic "cover" on the headliner. I have an early 1972 (built August 1971) with the base interior, deluxe seat belts, and built at Flint that only has the two chrome wire loops on each side to hold the shoulder belt. I bought the car from the original family and it had not been modified. I have another '72 with the same color base interior, standard seat belts, built at Flint in July '72 and it has the long plastic covers. I have never looked into when they switched to the plastic covers/retainers but now I'll start paying attention.

I don’t know when the change over took place.

Fisher Body was responsible for building the shell, so there is nothing about this in the assembly manuals, and there is almost no information from Fisher.

I do know the chrome loops were different for each year.
69’s were 2 pieces with the loop being flat.
70’s were 1 piece with the flat loops.
71’s were 1 piece but had a recessed loop, so there was more room for the belts and
I am used to seeing 72’s with the plastic slides.

Very interesting guys. The only reason I ask is because my GS car was built in May 72 at Fremont. It does not have the holes in the framework for the wire loops. The only hole drilled is the rear hole on the back loop. Closest to back of the car. Unless that is for the plastic cover also? I am not familiar with the plastic covers at all. How do they attach? I appreciate all of the info, you guys are too smart. Thanks, Ronnie.

If I remember correctly they are pop riveted to the roof panel and then the pinch-welt covers it up.

Maybe someone here could verify this or add a picture.

Anyone have a good picture of this? Thanks, Ronnie.

I don't have a photo handy of the attachment points with the interior molding removed but here are photos of the unrestored headliner of a '72 2-door and a '72 4-door. As Duane mentioned, there are retained under the molding. I have some of these plastic seatbelt retainers sitting in a box for a future project and when I run across them I'll post a photo.

Thanks Gary. Those are pretty slick! I should dig around in my manuals and look for a diagram.
