What is the correct paint layout for a 71 GS grill? What is black and what parts are silver? Is this correct? http://www.hemmings.com/users/184896/gallery/1333.html
I saw photos of Ken Lisk's 71 GSX. All black with silver on parts of grill that stand proud from rest of grill. That would be the same for a normal GS, right? Is it flat or satin black and does any one know what color of silver? Thanks
I know this one is exactly correct, Greg... http://www.stage1registry.com/BuickGS/brad71gsx.jpg
Weren't all grills all manufacturers Ditzler PPG non -smudge silver. No metal flake. Pulverized silver pigment.
Greg here is a close up of a 71 GS grille painted correctly. The grille is painted silver, Argent (charcoal) on the squares, all the recessed areas semi flat black including inside the squares at the stud mounts. http://www.v8buick.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=213208&d=1321148581
I understand that at the "bottom" of the squares with stud mountings are painted black. Its hard to tell by the pictures, but is the "inside/sides" of the squares painted silver or black?
Greg. I have used Krylon or Eastwood paints on 71 Grilles. They are lacquer based which are best for plastic. It is a nightmare taping and painting a 71 grille. Done it several times. I am sure Dave69 can agree with that.
Thanks! I have to look at my very nice (1 crack) orig. but figured some folks would have the exact paints to get.
Dan, I used these with great results. Duplicolor flat blk, & gun metal, the 1246 Testors Silver was used for grill, also taillight surround.
Thanks! Dug my original/ never painted out today (very nice orig. cond. - couple minor cracks/nothing missing). Didn't get to look at too long exc. to note that the factory masking was certainly pretty crude. The '71 is 2nd in line at this point but going to try and do some components for it concurrently so it goes more quickly when it's turn comes.
What I use is a custom blend of PPG DP90 and DP48 to make a light grey to seal the grille. Next I paint it with a bright silver VW Silversbee on the front side. The squares are painted with an argent charcoal. The color is from a mid 90's GM grille. The black is GM interior paint. The paints were mixed as interior paint with a hardener so clear was not required.
