Went to high school with a guy named Harold Ball. He went by Harold. I always thought about his parents naming him that.

Wait. What was the topic of this thread again?

I went to school with a kid named Richard Head. He wanted to be called Richard but you know that didn't happen!

Off topic. ; ) I don't know if it would have been worth it for a dealer to do a GSX conversion in regards to saving money. Maybe if you bought the parts through the dealership and did it yourself. I could see someone getting it done at
a dealership if they wanted a 70 GSX other than
    white or yellow.

Hmmm ...saving money. Well, I have not done the math as to totaling up the MSRP of individual options which comprised the (WE1) A9 '70 GSX option package, but I would be very suprised if there was not some form of package discount (from Mother Buick) vs the total of all the individual options by themselves. Then, there's the theoretical paint work at the Dealer to complete the stripes. Can a Dealer do the job cheaper than the factory worker's expertise and built-in costs on a mass production scale. Probably not. Then, theres the cutting of the hood for the tach and its installation ..... drilling the holes in the trunk lid (inside and out), etc. Sure, if a Dealer started discounting the price .... or, doing a "favor" for someone, but I am not counting the these last two as purely conjecture.

The GSX was around $1k+ option package which could seemingly buy a lot in parts & labor back then. Sans the GSX steering wheel & variable ratio PS, it'd only be f&r spoilers, tach, & decals, dash emblem, plus the striping plus the cost of the factory available options. Of course you'd also wind up w/fender & trunk emblems. I doubt in the case of the '70 that if the story I heard was true, that anyone thought through all the details.

I agree, you weren't saving much and I'd certainly have rather have had it all done at the factory even it was a couple hundred dollars more but there's always someone looking for an angle. I wonder if the factory would've taken/built a SCO color GSX in '70. I'd suspect if a dealer had the pull/persistence it could've happened.

You are also “assuming” that a 1970 dealer installed GSX would have all the pieces that a Factory car would have. I don’t think you could make that assumption.

The one I was talking about was exactly as described above, someone wanted one in a non-available color, and from what I was told, had no intention of waiting to see if an “SCO” was even available. Supposedly they wanted delivery in a few days.

The dealership was looking at either selling a car or not selling a car. I don’t think the money differences were a consideration.

    And guys,
dealerships changed things on the lots all the time. They would swap radios, wheels, and in at least two instances (that I know of) swapped entire interiors out of cars to make sales.

I may go down and take a look at this 'Tribute GSX" and have a question about the Arctic White color. Is Arctic White CC the same as Apollo White 10 10? I know the '71 I sold several years ago was Arctic White and looked like Apollo White.

CC and 10/10 are the same...just a different name. Paint code 11/11 is slightly different that paint code 10/10.

I agree it's a beauty. Too bad it has no matching numbers in the drivetrain. 1973-5 motor, 1977 Turbo 400, and 1971 Chevelle rear with 2.73 gears. (2.73 isn't a misprint).

I went to high school with a Harold Johnson and Ronald McDonald (yes, he even had red hair).

There was a guy at work that had the name Dick Short... it was funny to look him up in the company phonebook since everyone was listed alphabetically by last name.
