    J.Staged My Therapy...!!

Last day open at Milan dragway for the season Nov. 2014,...some test and tune for the post skylark.. put 10 runs down,...

Well it was very cold out about 46* for the high and about 10-15 mph cross wind over the track, and went by myself, but very happy with the results,..

Made 2 change's before I left,.. I put my K&N 4" air cleaner on the motor and set timing at 36* in at 2100 rpm.. everything else still the same like high school nationals, battery is still factory location and power steering and AC box is still on the fire wall... set air pressure on the hoosier quicktime pro's at 14 lbs hot.. and did not use the 850 holley.. probably should have..:Do No:

Run down of engine and car,..

--350 buick,.. stock bottom end, down to the cast pistons, rods, bearings, all factory never taken apart,..
--Cam,. T/A 310, adj. pushrods, stock steel rockers,.. oil pressure set at 70 lbs at 5100 rpm going thru top end.. finish line... shifting at 6000 rpm..
--Heads ,. bigger valves, ported real good no flow figure's, shaved .030 maybe more did not CC them and .020 head gasket,,.. hooker headers..
--Compression,.. maybe 9.2-1 or 9.4-1 on 93 oct pump gas, timing at 36* at 2100,. Also -8 line from tank going to carb with black holley Elec,. pump..
--T/A intake,.. ported to heads and some cleanup inside, using a proform holley 750 dp,. jets 79 frt and rear 88 no power valve..
--Trans,.. stock 350 turbo with shift kit, not rebuilt, original to car.. TCI -- 3500 stall, foot breaking at 2800 leaving the line,...I shift with a B&M Pro stick shifter and auto meter guages..
-- Rear Axle,.. 3:73 posi,. 8.5 --10 bolt using hoosier 27'' tall tires,.. big and little pro stars wheels
--Suspension,.. frt.. 90/10 old lakewood shocks loose sway bar and factory shocks in back with upper adj. control arms from jegs...
--Full interior bench seat in car but no carpet..
--Ignition,.. is MSD 6al--6200 chip in place,.. I've hit that a few times.. lol

So for the ET's,.. track was unpredictable, spinning some, I'll give you the 4 best passes,..

    ~2nd run -- 13.10 at 103.23,. 60 at 1.92
    ~4th run -- 13:01 at 103.48,. 60 at 1.84
    ~6th run -- 13:11 at 103.09,. 60 at 1.93
    ~7th run -- 13:04 at 103.27,. 60 at 1,86

Very happy with the results,...If son would have drove., might have been some 12:99's,.. he's 70 lbs lighter than me.. lol
-- I did meet Chris Cornett's (drive's 10 sec buick skylark here on the board..)his buddy Chad,.. driving a 70' chevelle 496 BBC going 11 teens at 121 mph, nice car,.. but he couldn't believe the little 350 sbb was running that fast, he love'd the sound of that 310 cam,.. lol,.. nice meeting you Chad,..

OK,... thanks for listening,.. good day today..

So you like the 36* total! Pretty consistant runs, considering the cold track. Good Job Jerrold!:TU:

    Thanks,,.
Marty,. it seem to like it today,.. but tried 38* for 2 runs throttle felt spunky, but the car spun those passes at a slower ET almost 101 mph, 2nd was 13: 20's at 102,40,.. I could have told more if it would have hooked more consistent..

    Great time:TU:
Im inching myself towards 13's bit by bit!
Being a new guy to the track, Im figuring stuff out a little at a time, definatley FUN:TU:

Do you have any plans for the car over winter? I know for a fact that the 310 cam works well with nitrous... There was a guy with a very similar combo, mostly stock with 310 and he ran low 11s on a 125 shot...

  9. J.Staged

    J.Staged My Therapy...!!

-- Sean,.. We probably will not do anything,. Nitrous would make this motor turn on for sure but I don't have it laying around,.. but, i still want to put the 850 holley back on it in the spring and keeping everything the same for comparison,..so we can see if it breathes better with the big valve heads at the higher shifting at 6000 rpm,,

To mine and everybody else's surprise,.. this unbalanced motor combo did more than we thought it would,.. If we put 4:10 gears and 4000 stall conv. in,..it would go 12:90's with me driving,.. that's what I think would put it at its full N/A potential,.. and we might just see that next year with my son driving the way it is now,.. not changing anything...

I think we will test and tune and drive it one more year,.. and we might just put the motor up for sale to help fund a bbb for my sons car...=

    Nice!
I read your combo and your set up sounds close to mine, except you have your suspension set up for the track vs. my street suspension, plus you have a bit deeper gear to my 3.42
Your running richer on your secondary side than I am, ( I have #80 jets) Im wondering if Im rich enough (fuel wise) I put the lightest spring Holley has on the secondary side, and put new valve springs in and I picked up 3-4 mph, so im heading in the right direction.
Spring time Im getting 15x8 rims and 275-50-15 MT's to cure my traction issue, AND sending my original Q-Jet to Everyday Performance for a rebuild and Calibrate. Im done with the 750 Vac. Secondary Holley, it runs ok, but I want my Rochester back:pp
    Your times encourage me:TU:

    J.Staged My Therapy...!!

    Thanks Mark,..
--Before i put the 90/10 shocks on it, we had already went 13:26 at 102 mph by just loosening the frt sway bar and drag radials with a 850 holley DP...
but, I do think the 90/10 shocks helped some..
--The last track day, a 750 holley DP was on the car already and K&N air cleaner was added with a timing change that helped,.. along with a aggressive driver,.. lol

--Now,.. If your still using the stock fuel pump without a pusher pump at the tank it will never see its full potential at top end,.. also, spend your money on a good used double pumper carb. "whether its a holley, Quick fuel, AED carb, Pro form, Demon",.. that somebody has been using or new, and tune it to your car,.. squirters will have to be changed to larger ones Im sure to get past some off idle stumbles... these DP carbs are instant neck snappers when set up right...and still very streetable...

-- I've never had much luck racing vaccume secondary holley carbs,.. and save your QJ for running around town when your done racing...
-- Your motor combo looks feasable for low 13 sec times,.. but you have to finish Putting the icing on the cake to make it run good,.. you should be using 2-1/2" exhaust also... it also means, more fuel, stall converter, DR tires and maybe more gear later on.. you have to spend money all the way around the car to make everything work,.. and it doesn't mean you have to buy everything new,..
--Honestly my son's car is 85% used parts,.. rear 3:73 gears and posi, shift kit and stall conv. used, .Headers, 2-1/2" exhuast, T/A intake, carb used,. Autometer guage's, B&M shifter, Weld pro stars and tires all used,. HEI ,. MSD unit, used...

-- Trust me,. I read every 350 sbb article over and over and built this motor by tossing combo's around on my computer dyno for a year,.. I told my son if this car does 100 mph the first pass,.-- I think 13:38 at 101.2 first pass,..-- then I've done my homework... but I've been doing this stuff for 30 years and learned from Magizine's and some of the best buick guy's around my hometown and on this board,..

-- Remember the challenge was not to rebuild the short block.....

--Mark,.. stick with it,. don't let money stand between you and your happiness,.. lol

    Good Luck,.. jerrold

Mark; I agree with Jerrold, I got rid of my vac Holley,(sold it to a guy with a camaro), Been running a tuned 750 dbl pump, that is very responsive, and just went thru my 850 dbl pump Demon to experiment with. I saved my original Q-jet, in a box somewhere.

Plus the Holleys & square bores look cool :bglasses: Think of them as ported carbs!

    Thanks Jerrold!
What carb did you use for the above runs?
If a 750 or 850 DP will run better than the Q-jet on the strip Im all for that, and still run decent on the street and get ok mpg, NOT gph LOL, that would be cool:Brow:

    Fox's Den 355Xrs

When that single plane intake gets on there you/we are all going to need a 850 DP. I am using a 750 DP and I like it I just tune it to what ever its needs are and that is it. I am not worried about gas mileage. Get one with a 4 corner idle set up you can really fine tune the idle this way. The Holley HP series has more features but it will cost for those, but worth it.

the guys that run nhra stock rules going mid 11's on motor. now imagine what those cars will do with the new s/p. and they have to run the so called 'stock' oem parts. what do you think they will run for times?

  16. alec296

    alec296 i need another buick

My opinion is carb size needed with the sp3 intake will go down Alittle bit also. Along with night rpm ranges. Can't wait to see.

    J.Staged My Therapy...!!

Mark,.. a 750 holley /proform main body carb was used for the last 13 runs at the track,.. It took the first 3 runs to get this carb setup at the track,. this was at the high school nationals with my son driving then I took the car a couple weeks ago for the last 10 runs..which produced it best passes so far,..

These carbs are great on the street once there setup,.. BTW.. I do use a 1/2" 4 hole carb spacer under my carb... with the t/a intake..

  18. Mark Demko

    Mark Demko Well-Known Member

I also have a 4 hole spacer under my carb. on my T/A intake.
Im kinda glad winter is here and the tracks are closed, Im getting 'fused about carb selection, Q-Jet, Holley, Demon, I have a few months to stew about this:pray:
    Thanks again!

That FI will support up to 550 HP can even run boost with it as long as its not over 550 HP.

I believe it is self tuning as well, so it will optimize your fuel curves for you, no guessing on jets, acc. pump squirters and such.

If you think you will eventually upgrade the engine to more than 550 HP then an FAST EZ EFI 2.0 will support 1,200 HP. GL
