I am in the process of buying a 1970 GS Stage 1 in Massachusetts. The car is a project and has been sitting for a few years. It was listed in the "leads" section a few weeks back but the Craigslist ad for the car has been taken down since then. It has a Wayne Roberts report and the seller seems legit. I want to make sure all the original Stage 1 stuff is there so I compiled the checklist below for when I inspect the car.

I am flying out from MN to look at the car so I won't have the time or facilities to pull the heads and look at valve sizes, etc so i will have to rely on what I can find from serial numbers and visual inspection. I made the checklist below to help with the process. Click on it for a bigger view.

Am I missing anything? Are there any other hard to find GS parts that I need to account for when looking at the car? Any info/help/advice would be appreciated.

  2. Was that the one in primer in Upton MA? Those guys have several Buicks at their shop and Buick guys in the area have differing opinions of them if it's the car I am thinking of.

In addition to your list, I'd do a search on here for the correct BB frame # to ensure that if the car is a Stage car, it at least has a BB frame.

Yeah the car is in Upton although the photos showed of the car looks like it was repaint of the original Sherwood green, not primer. The seller does have other Buicks not sure if he is the same guy you are referring to. Probably aren't to many multiple-GS owners in Upton so its probably the same guy.

Thanks for the pointer on the frame.

I am finding conflicting info on the correct Stage 1 distributor part numbers. Is it 1112016 or 1111962?

Very early cars could have the 1111962.

    possibly Aug / Sept build.

Buick noted the change for the Sept. '69 printed '70 service manual in March of 1970 of the early cast 1111962 and the late cast of 1112016.

Just depends on the build date of the car. But the 1112016 is accepted for the complete build year.

Just as an FYI on this subject, my GSX was built 09A (1969) and carries a 2016 distributor built, if I can remember, H16 (August 16, 1969). John C's former red car was similar, if I recall correctly and was built 09B.
