Dave, Could you post a link, or give me Mr. Worthingtons user name on ROP so i could do a search and find those photos? I was unable to find them when I searched. Thanks!

So Dave, what is the "Holy Grail" as far as Oldsmobile is concerned? Is it a 442, W31 4 speed convertible? I dont follow Olds that much and am a bit curious. In other words, what is the most valuable muscle Olds right now?

Dave Worthington uses the screen name "Oldsranch" on ROP.
I think the name of one of the posts was "Byron pics". There were 2 or 3 including some great shots of the Hurst Hairy Olds.

I'm not sure what the holy grail of Olds is. There's a good discussion on ROP right now entitled "King Olds" that addresses this subject. Most seem to agree on the 66 W30. 71 W30's are very high on my list, and of course, I like any W31. 4 speed Starfires (65-66) are also very high up there and very rare. Of all the Hursts, I like the 68's best. All are pretty neat.

I used to think I knew what heads came on what W30 and Hurst in the 68-69, but I'm really not that sure anymore. I thought D heads came out in 1969, but sure as anything up pops an original 68 W30 with D heads and I've seen many 69 Hursts with C heads. ???????

Don't shoot me here, my favorite car is still a 62 Pontiac Catalina, Ventura, or Grand Prix 421 HT w/ 4 speed tripower. Closest I came to this was a 61 Catalina convertible with 389 tripower and 3 on the tree, then a 63 Catalina Convertible with 4 speed, 421 trpower. Both were maroon color with white tops and tricolor interiors.

Erwin, that may be the black Ramrod from Canada. I haven't seen or heard from it since the Centennial.

Hot Rod Harry's dad just sold his all orginal 66 Starfire with 4spd a few months ago :( If you look at Harry's webpage it seems him & his dad got bit by the Ford bug almost 2yrs ago, they both have '03 Cobras and Harry Sr also has an '03 or '04 Mach1 as well..............I think Harry Sr's 67 W-30 is sorta up for grabs as well

I'll agree with you on the 62 Pontiac Ventura, there's a black on red one I see at our local BOP in August, looks real sweet 389 w/tri-power he bought my friends 63 Impala 409 SS, the Ventura was in an issue of Pontiac Enthusiat magazine I think sometime in '02 or '01, not sure

Hey, I parked next to your friend's W-30 at the Somerset Nats '93. He also had the 4-speed Starfire there too. That was an awesome car!

    I sure miss mine

This photo taken in 1/03, right before my friend bought it.
The photo was color, but the scanner I use won't do color, which is fine as this photo could be from 1973 - except for the plate.
I sure miss it but it's still in the "family".
    Discoveries by the new owner:
    1) Blew out original rear wheel brake cylinder on ride home.
    2) Found a broken valve spring (how'd that happen?)
    3) Stretched timing chain - see above.
Hey - for what he spent he got a deal!
The heads are "D" by the way.

I just got off the phone with Tom Drew, who has the 68 Hurst that "sold" on ebay a coupla weeks ago for $32k. Turns out the high bidder contacted him and doesn't have any money, but has a liot of cars to trade. I would have blown a gasket, but Tom says he's had many offers around that and doesn't worry about it. He's converting it back to Stock and plans to offer a trade to this guy for a few of his cars including a nice 70 Pace Car convt. If he takes it fine, if not fine.

He cleared up the C and D heads on Hursts for me. 68's had C heads on A/C cars, and D heads on non A/C cars. All 69's had D's. Now that wasn't too confusing.

Car is over at the painter next to my 66 442 getting a few touch ups done. It is REALLY nice.

Don't you mean '69s had Cs? I always assumed '69s had the '68 AC heads.

I don't think so. It was never confused on the 69's, always thought they had D's. It was only the 68's that confused me.

I know of two absolutely drop dead 70 Pace Car convts. One is in Lansing (Ashley JOnes) and isn't for sale (Tom Drew used to own that and tried to buy it back recently) and the other is in Minnesota (Marc Carpenter). Marc used to own one of the Demolition Man cars (the nice one on the movie that was used for the closeups and not destroyed. Someone else has it now.

    You know how it goes!

All of the '69 H/O' s were supposed to have 'D' heads on them, but some of the A/C cars headed out the door wearing the 'C' castings. I can not believe the number of '69 H/O's that are coming out of the wood work for sale right now and the prices that they are asking. It must be that time of the year, spring fever has hit!

Wish I could prove it, but........

There's no way to prove it, but I will flat ass guarantee that NO 69 production Hurst Olds left the Lansing plant with the wrong heads on them. That's another urban legend like the W31 Rallyes, etc. The inspections on those special builds were very intense since they screwed up our normal assembly process. The engines came over from the engine plant as a group, the cars were scheduled as a group (not all 500 at once, but in smaller groups).

There may have been some early engineering cars that were built with whatever were available , but were not part of the scheduled build. You can't run a high volume manufacturing facility without those types of checks, balances, and controls.

I don't know what defines a "production" car, but to us, it was what came off the end of the line.
