    Hi guys,

I had the owner of the station I get my race fuel at just call me.. he has a customer with a 65 Riv with a 401 in it.. PS pump is not working... I have the pump from a 65 Skylark with a 300.. I sent him some pics, he says the tank is a little different looking, his does not have a neck on it.. but we are wondering if the pump itself is the same as the Riv pump.. In the later years, the long neck tank and the triangular tank used the same pump.. wondering if this is the same deal. He says the bottom round part of the tank, and the pump mounting look to be the same.

    Whose got the skinny..

Also, if you have an extra 65 Riv pump assembly for sale, he would be interested.

    Let me know..

    Thanks
    JW

    Hi Jim,

The `65 Buick parts book lists a different pump for the Special/LeSabre cars and the full size cars. The big cars take a larger power steering box so I would imagine the pump output/pressures are synched accordingly. I have whatever parts your friend should want as I have a large inventory of `65 Riv parts. If he needs anything, drop me a message and I can rovide my contact info.
    Thanks,
    Tom

The 66 has a very short neck, the 65 has an extended neck. I'll take a look at my 300 vs my 401 for any differences between them, tho both are 66's.
Here's a pic of a 66 pump, courtesy of Google:

Interesting Walt.. the 65 long neck looks exactly like the pump on the 65 300 motor that I have here.. was in a Skylark. My guy seems to be describing the 66 pump to be the one he is looking for..

Checked my 66 parts book and there are also different #s for small block vs big block.
65-66 big block show the same number. Jim, I'd say that narrows down the search.

Google image search for 65 Riv shows short necks, 65 Skylark GS shows long neck. 66 Skylark GS went to short neck!

1st. off most ALL GM pumps are the same or very simular. What's the diff. if it's got a short or long neck unless the owner wants as stock as possible??? Then again most housings interchange with each other. Just need to check the way the bolts that hold the housings on & hold it all together you have to make sure they are compatible as far as sealing & any rubber o-rings. The pressures & volume were controlled by various ways. To get the same as the pump it has now all that's needed is to remove the 1" nut that the high pressure hose goes to & use it, the valve & the spring behind it in the replacement pump.
