Looking for a 4spd shifter for my GS. I am accumulating parts to do a 4spd conversion. Being my car is no where close to original I am ok with original but if you or someone you know has a vintage cool shifter from back in the day they would part with please let me know. Thank you
My plan is right now to run a Muncie 4spd. I did not realize the shifter was trans specific. I thought you could change shifters fairly easily. I am not proficient with 4 speed stuff. I am still learning. I hear a lot about M20 M21 ect ect. but I kind of thought the shifter could be put on about anything except you would need correct rods. I guess I probably need to get on the "U-Shift em" area and spend a little time learning more about all of this.
Ryan, I have a Muncie 4-speed vintage aftermarket shifter with the linkage. It was in the 69 "Motion Equipped" car when I got it, and I put the original style shifter/linkage back in the car. It also has the reverse lockout plate with the red plastic knob attached, and I believe it is an aftermarket Hurst shifter. I can dig it out and take some pics if you are interested. Let me know. Hey Duane, I had another member offer me a similar shifter they called it a "Super Shifter, a variation on their Competition Plus shifter" The concerns I have with that shifter are that it looked to be straight up and down with no bend and it seems most all of the A-Body shifters had a bend in them. Secondly I was concerned that the red handle that you have to pull before you can shift into reverse wont fit through the consolette hole ? What do you think ? did it fit up through your consolette ? I am learning a lot about 4 speeds. Way more to know about them then I originally thought.
When I got my car it had the factory 4-speed consolette with an aftermarket 8-G tach mounted in it, and the aftermarket shifter sitting in the car. Neither was attached, so I have no idea how the 2 were mounted together, but it probably required making up some type of custom boot, or at least punching a hole in the boot for the knob. (I have seen this done on several Corvettes.) You are spinning your wheels here. The first thing you need to figure out is if you are going to use a factory consolette. If so then that would probably dictate what pieces you can use. I think my set-up has the bend in the handle, but will check. The other thing you need to think about is what I call the reverse lock out linkage. You will need some way to turn on the reverse lights on the back of the car, when you put the trans in reverse. I don't think any of the aftermarket shifters come with any linkage to do that. Your best bet might be to purchase a reproduction shifter with all the linkage including the reverse lockout linkage. The repro kits may also have the switch for the reverse lights. If you have a 70 assembly manual you could see what I am talking about. Duane
Here are pics of some of the pieces. Looks like they cut and welded a different handle on it to fit the A-body consolette. It might be the original handle for all I know. Duane
Looks to me that the handle was heated & then bent as you can see the handle is Blue where it was bent. A cut & welded handle would actually break if shifted hard as in racing. Used to do this alot with some shifters using consoles. Could also come up with a way to mount a back-up light switch to the shifter under the car like an older A-Body, Corvette or some older GM cars. Ames Pontiac has the parts needed in their catalogs as well as the various Corvette suppliers. Just my thoughts. Tom T.
