Id personally go 482 because to make a 494 you have to take alot off the crank weakening it. Ask around im sure there are a few guys here who will tell you they've broken cranks in 494s

It's been my experience, and I have heard it confirmed from others, that until you put an aftermarket crank in a motor to stroke it, gains are minimal at best.

Unless you have totally max ported Alum heads, spend the extra money on the heads, there is more power there, than in these small strokers.

Almost all the motors I build these days are 470's, but that has more to do with ecomonics than with power output.

Thanks for input,Jim do you think nitriding crankshaft and using alum rods in 494 less the chances of cracking rod journals or should I do a 482.

I agree with Jim,we've done quite a few different stroke combos,494,482 even some destroked ,and the 482 runs as well as a 494,so all our strokers now are the 482 with ported heads. If we go big its a 525 with real well ported heads and matching intake and big carb.

Nitriding is really about surface hardness, and is required to run a hard bearing on our stock cranks, such as an H series clevite race bearing. Overall I don't think that the nitriding in itself will help, but the larger radius you can put on the rod journals with the race bearings certainly will.

That said, I have a "done right" 494 crank full of cracks.. Lasted one season at the 750 HP level.

Alum rods will always help the stress on the bottom end, just be mindful of your clearance issues with the bigger rods.

It seem as HP levels are increase 494 has issue,I will end up building 482,you guys have been great Thanks for all your insight.

can someone explain to me what it takes to build a 482 on the bottom end . and whats a 470 455 60 over? would a man be better of going 462 with aluminum heads and still make the same power with a 482 with more hp per dollar and cu inch?

A 470 uses a 4.350 bore, with a 3.95 stroke. Rod journals on the crank are offset ground to change the stoke of the crank, at the same time reducing the rod diameter to the standard 2.200 size of a BBC crank.

A 482 is the same thing, except they use a 2.100 size for the rod journal, and offset grind the crank to 4.050.

The advantage of the 470 is that there are off the shelf reasonably priced rods good to 800 HP that require only the correct piston to make a drop in installation.

The 482 requires custom rods. There are no 6.600-7" small block Chev rods in anyone's catalog. So your looking at $995 for custom Alum rods, and up to $1300 for steel rods.

Personally, I find it hard to believe that the extra 12 ci is worth the money.

Once again, spend it on the heads. If the heads are killer, get a roller cam.

how much would a man be looking at to have a guy like you to put together a 470 short block looking around the 500 horsepower range using stg 2 alum ported heads ta ?

I did the same basic thing as Jims 470 but didn't bother with the extra stroke. Eagle makes a 6.635 BBC rod for $450. With $600 Wiseco pistons the block will just need a clean up cut to get zero deck. The rod journal needs to be widened slightly in addition to being made smaller. Crank grind, bearings, balancing, rods, pistons, and rings came to about $1600 for the 464 rotating assembly. You can do a similar thing with a Pontiac rod and keep the Buick bearing diameter.

As far as stroking goes you have to have the heads to make stroking worthwhile. I built a 526 Mopar using a billet crank from an alcohol funny car. 4.375 stroke, uses stock length rods and an off the shelf piston. It raised my compression from 11.5 to 13-1 and added 80 cubic inches but I only gained .15 in ET because I didn't have the heads to support it at the time.

What is the issue with just going with 464 with a sportsman rod from TA ? some 494 seem to break alot and my 464 runs pretty hard....:beer

When talking to the guy that does my machine work about getting one of the TA available blocks and I was asking about what he could do with the stock crank, he said that going down to the 3.00" main was no problem but he did not recommend going to a big stroke on a stock crank because of weakening it and ending up with the cracking you see that might run awhile but is a gamble after spending the money to buy the aftermarket block and special cam etc. That was the main reason I decided to wait until I could get possiblely better heads (mine are not bad and have a good bit of work but only Stage II SE) and get the $2800. crank. I had got excited about having the block, but think it was better to get my ducks in a row a little better. Would like to try some killer heads on my current combo and see what they are worth first.

My 470 out runs my 482. All my motors are 470. Friend broke his crank in his 494.

    Jim,
What are the cost of the crank work to do a BBC rod to go 470CI and custom piston compared to TA rods and good JE "shelf piston" for a 464?

Here's a good write up and cost list.
