cray1801 Too much is just right.

A buddy of mine (Mike) just reached the 3000 mile mark with his new BMW M5. He's been waiting for the factory recommended limitations to be lifted, and today we played a game of chase. We had just come back from a group lunch at work, and I was taking a colleague (Joey) the long way back to display some Buick power. Next thing I know, instead of Mike taking the turn to go back to the plant he stays right behind me :eek2: :) . I knew it was on.

I got to the first "country" stop sign out of town and rolled across the intersection leaving the car in first gear. I got up to 25 or so and decided to lay some tread. Pedal goes down, tires haze, rear end starts to skate, Joey holds on. When the rpm's reach 5600 or so I shift to L2, skating continues, rear drifts to the right and back to the left again and at about 60 I gain traction. I glance over at Joey.....he has a big smile on his face :) . This surprised me as Joey is a very clean-cut almost uptight kind of guy.

I let off around 80, then gradually slow down to ~50 and pull the trans back into L2 and wait for Mike to match my speed, he's maybe 4 car lengths back. I ease down on the loud pedal and Mike jumps on the M5 and we're off. I notice Mike is falling off the pace, we take it up to 100 or so before I we let off. Looks like I put maybe 5 more car length on him.

Now the big test after a few miles of slow driving to find a good spot. Mike get in front and stops, I stop behind him and wait till he hit's it. I knew it would be hard not to spin with these hard street tires. Mike takes off and I ease the pedal down and have it floored by the time I get to 40 minimizing, but not eliminating, spinning. I shift to 2 at about 45 and start reeling him in. I make up the car length he put between us off the line and closed the gap by 60. I let up right after that as a hill was coming up that I could not see past. Of course Mike stays in it to hit the curves, as it is his hometown backroad, just miles from his house.

When we got back to the plant Joey says "you need to record your exhaust sound so I can play it on my car" :TU: When Mike gets out he says, "Man you really did a good job on that car".

It has been a long road but it all seems worth it now :beer
