I got the motor finished for my 58. The whole neighborhood heard the brutality of it to. :) To start here is my build.

    59 364 pulled out of 1 of my 59s bored 60 over
    Russ cam
    adjustable pushrods
Patriot shorty headers (had to grind exhaust flange ports out as they didn't line up correctly to the gaskets)
Docs mod 4 barrel intake with same mod to 2 inch aluminum carb spacer with intake exhaust block off plates.
800 CFM Ede AVS 2 carb
    stock distributor
pcv valve where draft tube was
full rebuild from bearings, new pistons, stiffer valve springs, etc

pulleys not installed yet (need 58 water pump so pulleys line up) so stuck a garden hose in water pump inlet to keep motor cool. Fired right up after 1 revolution, idles a little rough about 600 rpm (cam grind I think) but clears up around 800rpm. I ran it at a variety of speeds to ensure everything wore together (rebuilt) from idle to aprox 2000 rpm through a gallon of 91 octane (about 1 hour run time). The throttle response is incredible compared to the stock 4gc carb and 4 hole intake. It is noticeably more powerful and responsive. Needless to say my best friend was jealous when he saw it run and now is to afraid to race me :p. His hot rod 59 Ford and mostly stock 302 are just no match and he now knows it.

In retrospect the shorty headers and docs mods with the new carb are likely the best performance upgrades that have been done to my 364 and its noticeable!

Next on the list is getting a adapter kit to bolt my rebuilt 700r4 behind it and get the rear end mounting kit installed so the 61 3rd member can be bolted to the stock rear end.

Off to a great start JZ. That 700r4 and the extra power of the fresh motor will really increase the drivability!

Not sure what rear end mounting kit you are talking about, but check out my ‘60 LeSabre conversion to see what I did! Rides just like factory. New suspension cost me very little - one giant heim joint and some steel. Less than $200.

The mounting kit is the Torque Tube Eliminator Kit that Russ advertised on his site paid 1k 10 years ago. I am interested to see your set up!

im sorry I do not. I got it from Russ Martin at Centerville Auto. I told him what I wanted and he ground me a cam. I think its similar to the 66 dual quad specs, but I didn't get a card with it

JayZee88 I've been thinking of yanking the Dynaflow out of my 61 and doing something like a 700R4 or 4L60E. I dig the factory look of the interior so don't want to give up my column shifter. Do you know if its possible to modify it to work with the modern transmission? I know the detents will be all off. I'm not that worried about the N safety switch I'm sure I can figure something out there. I'm just trying to avoid a floor shifter or steering column replacement. What are you planning to do for shifting?

I am using the factory column shift for the 700. The linkage rods are adjustable iirc to the trans so you can adjust the linkage so the trans shifts in junction with the detents. I put 'chrome looking' stickers on the shift indicator so I know what gear im in if I have a Darrel moment. I just won't have 2nd or 1st gear since the 700 has 2 extra gear selections over a 2sp dynaflow. That way the factory neutral switch still works (The only oops could be if you shifted in 'neutral' on a dynaflow shift indicator which would be reverse on a 700 iirc, but that's what the chrome overlay stickers are for) and I don't have to mess with anything else just the linkage.

Great info! Completely changes my perspective. Im really leaning that way now. I do t mind not having a shift detent for l1 and l2 as I wouldn’t shist manually anyway. I may even pick up an extra shift indicator and somehow pop out the screen and paint a new one with the proper letters. Thanks for the great info!

I bet a vinyl graphics/vehicle wrap shop could make a very nice decal for your PRNDL

I never thought of that. That is a good idea! I got a spare shift indicator from my 1st 58 and took the white paint out of the gear indictor and thought about filling them in with a clear epoxy and using some vintage metal letter stamps to burn in the correct pattern, but the stamps letters are to small and I was concerned I couldn't clean up the factory shift letters enough. Then I thought about using plexiglass and using a dremel to cut it to size for the indicator, but the way they mounted the indicator means I would have to use the same thickness plexiglass and cut out the recesses in it for the tabs to hold it in place (the factory lens is 1/4" iirc). In the end I settled for the the chrome stickers for a short term fix.

You might want to look at this group. They have a lot of different lenses for upgraded transmissions. I’m using their console shifter in a 63 Riviera for a 4L60E on Russ’s bell housing. When done interior will still look stock.

Have you looked into a neutral safety switch off a 1958 Buick with "Flite Pitch dynaflow"? It has PRNDG. Also, Buicks with ST300, ST400 transmissions have same neutral safety switch. Look it up on Rock Auto.

1958 Roadmasters came standard with Flite Pitch Dynaflow. I have one in my Roadie.

I got a flight pitch neutral safety switch and shift lens so the shift pattern lines up with the 700. I am getting a universal shift linkage for the 700 to replace the factory linkage from the frame bracket to the trans so I can adjust the throw from the column shifter to the trans so it lines up with the detentes on the column.

Your going to disable it by completing the circuit. How you do that depends on if you think an auto may ever go back in it. You could also move it over to a switch on the clutch that engages when the clutch is all the way in. That is how the modern cars have it on the standards. .

The reverse lights generally run off of that switch too. You may want to run a harness from there to a switch for the reverse rod on the trans.

lokar makes a cable adapter that you could use your column shift with. as for the indicator being off just have someone print out a new indicator to stick over the factory one.
