350 GIRDLE OR GRIDDLE

    when i look at the piece of iron. i look at it what they didn't and should have. but that's water over the dam.

    Awesome! Post some pics of the cross mounting bolts? I’m surprised you didn’t make the main caps much taller as that would give more meat for the cross bolt main bolts to secure to the caps. That being said I feel that bolt through the side of the block and the hole associated is a dangerous risk to allowing a block crack to form from that new hole in the block. Each new hole on the side of the block creates a risk of a crack beginning from that drilled hole. I’m also surprised you thought it was a good idea to mill away the cross brace of the block between the main cap parting line and the oil pan rail so that your cap could take up the space the factory re enforcement was placed. I’m also curious how you navigated the cross bolts through the oil pan bolt holes?

    I feel a lot of the problem with these engines is a floppy flexy crankshaft. Replace the wet noodle with a billet crank from King Cranks, money well spent.

    What’s the oil pump setup? My belt driven pump Sucks from the SRE engineered pickup from the pan and feeds the front of the engine.

    you question 'big block mopar' is not in vocabulary. my engine has 'chevy', 'ford', 'mopar', 'toyota', 'pontiac', 'honda' parts in it. this is an idea for the bottom end
    which would help stabilize the block at extreme ventures. but then again i don't really worry about the engine when you build it right.
    my issues right now is i think the 6-71 blower stresses the timing cover. all because the buicks are 'thin wall castings'.

    this is just food for thought. something i might have done in the future. all depends on the racing.
    am looking to go from a 671 to a 871. but hard to find at the right price.
    besides, i can make my own girdle if i have to.

    Maybe it’s the blue on those main caps, but they look like anodized aluminum o_O

    So be clear Johnny did you do the cross bolted mains on the 350 or are you just taking trash?

    Bolt spacing is different on the 350 but here's what I'm doing now on the 300's. In 3/16" stainless it costs $325.

    sean, no talking trash. just a different belief on hold the c/shaft vs block. i look at the metal a whole way different that you look at it.
    gary, the 350 is so much more comfortable to work with than the 455. i don't get excited with the driver going big rpm's with a blower.
    plus my background makes thinking taking things to extreme is fun because nobody goes there.

    maybe some will understand this comparison;
    it's like chasing a beautiful girl to get a date with her.
    i'm chasing the how far i can go modifying the 350 before it blows up.

    jim,
    couple of us were discussing yours. no complaints if it works for you. as you know when you sandwich and torque/tightening stuff, it changes attitude.
    sandwiches build up tolerances, uneveness and yorque compression problems down the road which means a constant check.
    thats why i posted the pics of the mopar main caps. i think thats a better avenue for holding the deflection in the block for
    my build. i definately think that buicks thin wall castings are not 100% up to par to 7500 and/or a blower. the other cure
    would be to encapsulate the whole block. yuk!
    jim, i would like to hear others on their thoughts with reasons on why/what they do or would do to tie the bottom end together.

    fwiw, it took me 15 mins to type/retype this because of typing and spelling errors. i hate it!!
