If it is an automatic, the linkage comes of pretty easily. You'll have to readjust it when you put it back on but that's pretty easy.

First, remove the trunnion so that the rod from the steering column can slide freely. Then pull the cotter/spring pin rod that slips into the "U" that is bolted to the trans. Once that is out, the side that goes to the frame is spring loaded. Push the rod up and back and it will come right out of the trans. Then you can pull it out of the frame bracket.

With that all out of the way, it should be a lot easier but it sure sounds like you are having more trouble than I remember. Rusted manifold bolts were my greatest challenge.

Not an automatic. Steering column? Did you put yours in from the top?

Alec, I did start to take it apart but decided not to. I wasn't quite sure how it came out and when it didn't after taking off a few things, I put them back on. I might have to go back to that route, though. I'm starting to doubt there's room to fit the header in, even if I could put it in perpendicularly. Major pain in the ass, ha ha!

Oh, didn't see any 3-on-the-tree. Can't say how that changes it. Definitely didn't put them in from the top.
