340 gave up the ghost

The 340 in my 66 Lesabre lost oil pressure and smoked the cam last week. I guess it's time to put something new in. Am I understanding correctly that a Buick 350 will bolt in place of a 340? Also it has a newly rebuild SP400. Will that bolt to the 350 or is there an adapter that would alow me to use the trans I have?

Yes a 350 is a bolt in swap and the 400 bolts to it perfectly.

    How’d the 340 loose pressure?

Someone will want that 340 if you aren't going to use it.

Also, I might mention that the 4.6L aluminum Rover heads can be used on that block. Not as much flow potential as the iron or TA heads but lighter, and pretty similar flow to the 300 alloy heads. They are closed chamber heads though so would need a piston change. The upside? Same chamber volume as the TA heads so a later head swap is enabled. Just in case you are considering a rebuild.

I was sitting at a railroad crossing on a hot day and the idiot lite came on. By the time I noticed it ad brought the rpms up it was too late. It shaved down the cam enough that 2 intake valves don't open enough and it ignites fuel in the intake and pops back through the carb.

Interesting... I'd like to keep the 340 but there's just so much more aftermarket available if I switch to a 350. If I had the money I always dreamed of building a Grand Sport spec 425 and putting it in but that's a ways off. I'll post the 340 on here if I do get rid of it...

I'm currently building a couple of 300's with stroker cranks (346 cid) ex-nascar rods, forged pistons, roller cams, TA heads (at least on one) titanium valves and keepers, beehive springs, roller rockers, lightened billet flywheel, mini starter, alloy valve covers, crank trigger COP ignition, port injection and an Eaton blower. My 340 has 7" Scat rods, forged pistons and o-ringed decks. How much more aftermarket are you looking for? (The above was not all bolt-on though much of it was.) I guess an intake would be nice but that isn't happening, however there is a new Aussie single plane for the 300 and a waterjet or laser program for spacer plates. Still an alloy intake saves less than 20lbs.

Currently no 350 heads are available from TA. But they are for the 340. Out of the box word is they flow a little better.
Maybe you should beat the bushes for a 455.

    Jim,

Do you have a build thread for any of those stroker 300 builds you're currently working on? Sounds very interesting, I would love to see/hear more about the crank trigger COP ignition, port injection and blower. Seeing the TA Rover heads on a Buick 300/340 would also be cool as well as a new intake option. The 300-2 in my 66 Skylark is a bit of a dog, BBB performance parts are not as readily available as they used to be so other options would be fun to consider.
