I still haven't gotten mine back from the Powder coater. He got really swamped and a couple of his guys were quarantined and they are swamped. I told him I was not in any hurry so it's likely he's not got them done yet. He is also a Snap On salesman,so he has that too..They look really cool yellow.

They were Yellow when they were new so I wanted them to look like they did back in the day. I checked around on line to see what shade of yellow would be best to use and this is the one they say is very close to the original color. I like it but if my buddy had a bigger cabinet to powder coat them at his work I would have done that instead.

Set back today. After care and time making sure I primed and painted the latter bars to perfection I let them sit and dry over night. Today before I was to put them back on I sprayed a coat of "glossy clear coat" on them. I used all Rustolium products so it should have been compatible. The result was a short time later all my hard work was destroyed !!!! I was PISSED !! I will have them blasted again next week and start all over again.

    Lacquer & enamel incompatibility?

I have had nothing but bad luck with Rustoleum paint for the past 10-years. Every couple years I forget and buy some, which ends up making the job 2 times harder than it needed to be. I'm now a Krylon fan...

I recently used Duplicolor for some of the motor parts on my GS400 and it worked great.

I checked and it said both were enamel. If it was not for the fact I really like the color I would change the paint I use. I may even pay someone to powder coat them because I can get the powder myself. I just need a shop with large enough oven.

Hey @Ryans-GSX I had this happen a couple times with spray painting various brackets. I found if you put the clear coat on too thick it happens and in your case you applied it the next day. I’m not a paint expert but with spray paint, I find you need to apply clear coat just after the color coat. Meaning, you need to do it all at once. Or wait 2-3 days for the color to fully cure and then clear it. So I’m thinking since you waited overnight, the color coat was fully cured and still releasing the solvents and it wasn’t ready for the next coat. I noticed with spray cans from like Eastwood say apply the next coat within an hour or wait 48 hours until cured. Depending on how much wrinkle there is, You might be able to get away with some sand paper to level out and then recoat with yellow let it flash and then clear it.

That sucks! They were looking good there, Ryan. It seems all these paints have changed somehow. I think the enamels are like acrylic enamels. I've always been a fan of Krylon and Duplicolor, too. But, other people swear by Rustoleum like Jason and Dave, etc. It doesn't work well for me.

After some trial and error I ended up putting air shocks on. Gets me the hight I need. Ride is much better than before. Some touch up painting on the latter bars and they look ok till I decide later on to powder coat them. I also had a set of very clean boxed lower control arms so I put them on as well.

Looks great....once you Powder Coat your first set of Ladder Bars....you’ll say to yourself, “What was I thinking of using Spray Paint”

Got a chance to take the car out this past weekend to a cruse in. So much better to drive with the 4:56 gears out and the 3:31 gears in it now. New shocks and coils also helped the ride a LOT !! Ladder bars are still really stiff but they just look so cool I cant take them off lol

Mart, I considered that but it was way cheeper for me to just change out the gears. Nice member here on the board hooked me up with a set of OEM 3:31 gears in fantastic condition for $75 and my posi in my rear axle was a 3 series that had a spacer for the 4 series gear. This made it easy to just change gears. I will say the old gear oil was clean but smelled so bad it stank up the entire shop lol. A lot of the things I have done to this car have been on the cheep. Thanks in large part to good friends and members wanting to see this car back on the road. I wish I could express the looks this car gets going down the road. One older man passed us sunday and followed us to the show just to see the car up close and get pictures. People go NUTS and I mean NUTS over this car. I love it and I am so happy to bring it out and let others see it. I wish I had the means to bring it to the Nationals but thats just not in the cards for me to do this year.

That is AWESOME! My top 5 cars on the forum....my highschool buddy had a '70 GTO with yellow ladder bars and air shocks to clear the 15x10 ultra reverse Centerlines. Rode like a rock but totally worth it, especially at 15 years old :)

Cool Ryan... well, your car actually was an autorama type custom way back when.
I think you should drive it as your daily, within reason.:)
I've enjoyed mine lately bigtime, except heavy overlap produces heavy smelling exhaust.
    It is still quite streetable!:D:D
