I run 3:90 gears in my ‘70 GS with a 29” tall rear tire.

One word TORQUE....also that 2500 conv I have helped the 2.56 out vs a stock converter.

3.55 to 3.73 from 12.80 to 12.35!? Something else must have been changed....or maybe the weather?

& Being able to go through the traps in 2nd probably helped.

My old 350 4-sp picked up several tenths if not a full .5 sec. going from 3.42 to 3.73. M-21 so maybe not as unexpected but still...

I'd love to change the 2.93 on my Roadmaster to 3.42 or 3.73 and if it picked me up .5 I'd be thrilled. Went 14.30 at ATCO once....be running 13s.

When you have Overdrive it is nice as you do not give up drive ability .

And lock up converter....I put a higher stall in and picked up 3 tenths and still same on highway.

Yah the 60 foot. and the pull in each gear more. IT IS COMBOS ... there are tons of people that think it is all motor... Everything is paired up with something else.
The right duration compression timing stall ratio etc.
I have instances in race cars where LESS ratio worked the stall better and got down the track a tenth faster ...
Race car went from 110 gas to E85 no other changes and got almost 1/2 sec 10.80 to 1040 Just fuel... BUT remember not everyones combos will react the same way.

I went back to 3.55 in the car as it is REALLY not a race machine...I just wanted it for a few years ...but freeway just is so much nicer with the 3.55 and overdrive.
If I want to here all that exhaust I will just get in the race car...lol. I am actually thinking about ditching the 3: exhaust and high flow muffs for regular stuff 2.5" and actual quieter mufflers.
    I am getting old....lol

Just saying I do not want the load noise on the street anymore. Just annoying...Seems cooler to be more silent and go fast. Daughter has a Monza with stock type exhaust you can not even here it running and does really fun burn outs and 2.56 gearing...lol.

    I can't recommend a 2-series gear highly enough for anyone who doesn't have a drag-only car.

While I still had my '69 4-door Special with 2.56 rearend & switch-pitch, I could run high 12's and get 17 MPG and have no hesitation about driving the car on long trips. Now that engine/trans is in a '73 LeSabre that runs high 13's and get 15+ MPG with 2.73 gears - also quiet and SO enjoyable to drive on long drives.
