My buddy has a 1996 Caprice classic police car that has the limited slip rearend and I was curious if it would swap under my 71 Skylark? It appears a little wider center of tire to center of tire is 62 1/4" vs 59 1/2" on the Skylark. Anyone ever do a swap like this.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

Too wide for a direct fit, plus I would think the mounts and coil spring location are off too.

The 8.5 carrier and gears could potentially swap. Not sure about the axle spline count, but I think it is 30. Your 71 rear is 28 spline. You would need to buy axles.

Your 71 rear is an 8.5 with bolt in axles. Keep the rear and build it. Parts are readily available.

wheel bolt pattern is not correct either except for the ss impala 5 on 4.75 the rest are usually 5 on 5
That cop car rear will fit the 73-77 cars though. regal cutlass gp etc. AGAIN wheel bolt pattern will be an issue. 5 x5 compared to the 5 x 4/75 pattern
Posi will retro fit BUT you need to buy 30 spline race axles for 370.00 which does not seem to be a good offset... lol.

I just checked the wheel bolt pattern on the 94-96 ss and it seems to be 5 x 5 also... man

I was really sure the SS had different 5 on 4 3/4" because you would want sporty rims for it and assumed they would use stuff from mid size car...BUT there were no mid size rwd cars so it really makes perfect sense. ;/

Jim, can the side gears be replaced to work with the GS axles? And what would be the cost for those?

I have a 90s 3 series Vista Cruiser Wagon posi carrier , requires the use of 30 spline axles much like the unit in question. I plan on getting some use out of the 28 spline posi which is in my 8.5 now, but the plan is to upgrade to the 30 spline in the future. Why not just go that route now if you are looking to upgrade? I do not quote understand where your going? You want to use a 90-96 housing with 28 spline GS axles? confused what your asking as this thread and splintered all over the place. :/
Auburn units have cones and the cones are part of the side gear in these rears...so NO you can not switch the side gears like you can a aftermarket high performance Eaton unit. you can just swap 30 to 28 or vise versa. Jim
