1986 regal gear box

Discussion in 'V-8 Buick Powered Regals' started by 1986 regal 455, Jun 20, 2011.

  1. i have a buick 455 in a 1986 regal. im trying to put the power steering pump and lines on. which hole in the gear box is for the high pressure line that comes off the pump. is it the one closest to the radiator or the fire wall? also is the gear box metric and im assuming the pump is standard.
do i have to have a line made for this application or is there one i can use from another car. thanks

Radiator one is the pressure side. Are you using the OE pump from the 455? Dunno if the fittings changed over the years...purdy much Saginaw metric fittings are what I'm familiar with. IIRC used the DS accessory bracket from the Buick V6 that came out and it bolted on to the 455.

  4. whats the trick on getting the pully off the old pump?

I believe the factory used 2 different fittings (18mm & 3/4) on the steering box to keep from switching the lines. Also, per advise from this site, I am running the stock Buick PS pump (350/455) and just switched out the large fitting & spring on the back of the pump. Everything bolted right up without any leaks or binding (cross thread).

I'm running a Stage 1 455 (1971) and Th400 in a Grand National (clone) with the F41 suspension & GN Steering Gearbox. Has good road feel in the steering. If you want to further "adjust" the road feel after doing the PS hook up, get a Jeep Cherokee steering shaft. This is a solid piece and eliminates the rag joint.

I will back up what gs_jimmy said..... 71 Pump, Metric fittings, GN box, and Jeep GC steering shaft.

All that is what I have in my 82 Regal, it does work well , I go to Piegon Forge TN to an event called Run Thru The Hills at (Pro-touring.com) and we take a cruise on a road called Tail of the Dragon, 11 miles long 318 turns, she did just fine. BTW that going up a mountain 11 miles then we come back down.

I do have other stuff done in the suspension area, like I have Poly Bushings, a GN front & rear Sway Bars, and billet tie rod sleeves.

To help stiffen it up more. I have frame horn braces ft & rear,Grand Prix lateral front connecting brace with the jounce bars (from a F41 suspension) in the front, radiator x brace, fender to radiator support braces.
Also I think my G-Force dual hump trans crossmember helps.

Still have a list of upgrades to do, x braces for the rear seat, poly body mount bushings with extra GNX bushings, then most of all up grade to tubular up and lower control arms front and rear... ect ect.

    hope this helps
