Hey guys, I have a 1979 Hurst Olds. I swear I talked to somebody who said that if you advance the camshaft 1 tooth while changing the timing chain, it wakes the engine up dramatically. Can anyone confirm that this is a shortcut/performance improvement? Opinions and experience with doing such a thing very much welcome. Thank you

    Hey doc,
Remember at the Nats(pitted next to you) when I mentioned that you were following me here on the forum, and we couldn't figure out why?

I think it was when you tried to buy an Olds 350 intake from me but shipping costs killed the deal. But that's not why I'm responding.

So...just wanted to say, the info you seek is in your parts wanted ad for the Olds 350, in the post above where this link sends you.

Hope things are going well for you. Hopefully will see you next year at the Nats!

Hey Jim! You were right, it’s all clicking now. After many delays, I decided to start working on that olds again today. Thanks for finding that piece of information.

I look forward to catching up in 22 at the Nats. Looks like we have to bring the 70 stage two car. GSR rules have changed and the 69 car won’t qualify.

I hope the weather and the turnout is as good as this year was!

If you degree in the cam then yes advancing or retarding it may help.

The only dramatic change would be if the cam was not installed correctly to begin with.
Do not blindly re-time the cam one tooth, degree it:D

Hopefully will have my M22z 4 spd installed by then! ;)

edit...good luck with the Olds 350. I agree with everyone else...degree that cam in. Or if you're looking for more power, change it to a different cam. Moving it a tooth sounds sketchy to me. Sounds like an experiment is in order, but only if you don't mind the risk. Lol

You should ask whoever told you that, how far are you moving the intake center line? What is the stock intake center line, and what are you moving it to? If they look at you like you have 2 heads, disregard whatever else they tell you.

On a side note, me and my youngest son just pulled the 350 Olds motor out of his 77 Lemans. He is dropping in a rebuilt olds 403. THe new motor is ready just need to get the transmission to the re-builder.

Don’t believe that 1 tooth stuff.
If you want to get this car to get more take off, look at rear end gears. It a 7.5 rear end. Probably a 2.41 gear.
Camaro/firebird 82 and up may have a 3 series rear if it has an overdrive transmission.
The Chevy Astro van , s10-sblazer-jimmy,-olds bravado all can have a 3.42 gear 87 and newer.
The gears and carrier will fit your 79 with pinion bearing changes. The spider gears you will need to keep from your carrier. So most posi from those cars will not work due to axle spline count.
A 2200-2400 torque converter will also add to the feel of power. And move car very quickly.
If you want to go into engine, mill heads and port, check dick Miller olds parts for a strong cam.
You can also get a 2.75 first gear set if you have a 350 trans in there. It may be a 200 so check for the word metric on trans pan
